Hitler was actually a war hero. The Iron Cross First Class was a very high award for valor.

Adolf Hitler served as a-lance corporal and dispatch runner in the Bavarian Army during World War I. He earned multiple military decorations for bravery, including the Iron Cross Second Class in 1914 and the rarer Iron Cross First Class in 1918.

Military Service DetailsEnlistment:

Volunteered for the German military in August 1914 despite being an Austrian citizen.

Unit: Served in the 16th Bavarian Reserve Infantry Regiment on the Western Front.

Role: Worked primarily as a regimental dispatch runner, exposing him to frequent front-line danger.

Rank: Reached the rank of Gefreiter (lance corporal), which is equivalent to a senior private.

Wounds and Honors:

Iron Cross 2nd Class: Awarded in December 1914.

Wounded: Injured twice during the conflict—once by shrapnel and later temporarily blinded in an October 1918 mustard gas attack.

Iron Cross 1st Class: Received in August 1918, a high decoration for an enlisted soldier at the time.

We have the benefit of hindsight and technology for modes of telling the horrors of war. No one should ever, ever smile at the prospect lf war. Even if justified, it is a horrid tragedy.

You don’t think this has been studied?

You should peruse the book “They Thought They Were Free: the Germans”

quote:

What happened here was the gradual habituation of the people, little by little, to being governed by surprise; to receiving decisions deliberated in secret; to believing that the situation was so complicated that the government had to act on information which the people could not understand, or so dangerous that, even if the people could understand it, it could not be released because of national security. And their sense of identification with Hitler, their trust in him, made it easier to widen this gap and reassured those who would otherwise have worried about it.

quote:

"But the one great shocking occasion, when tens or hundreds or thousands will join with you, never comes. That’s the difficulty. If the last and worst act of the whole regime had come immediately after the first and smallest, thousands, yes, millions would have been sufficiently shocked—if, let us say, the gassing of the Jews in ’43 had come immediately after the ‘German Firm’ stickers on the windows of non-Jewish shops in ’33. But of course this isn’t the way it happens. In between come all the hundreds of little steps, some of them imperceptible, each of them preparing you not to be shocked by the next. Step C is not so much worse than Step B, and, if you did not make a stand at Step B, why should you at Step C? And so on to Step D.

You lived through a version of this in the United States in 2020-2022.

Complicated situation for sure.
