I was in Mississippi, no looting in my area, we were all just helping each other. I think I gave away 3 generators ans a dozen room ACs, as we were on the hospitals power grid so we got power within a week. We were all just finding bodies etc. If I heard you were dead you were fine, amazing what happens when communication is word of mouth. My brother send 2 18 wheelers of shite to me, and we had so much shite and stuff we could barely give it away. (Snow shovels are great for cleaning up debris btw)
In my little church no one died from Katrina directly, but about half lost their homes as my church was right off the beach and many members lived on the beach or close to it. We buried someone almost every week for that year, it was just too much for many of our older members. So no one died from the storm but it really killed about 60 of our members. (Thanks to the church’s in California that bought us a new roof etc. You personally saved me 20k as I agreed to pay 25k for the new roof and renovations before the storm.Even though I moved I went to make my annual payment as I had agreed to do it and they laughed at me, saying we don’t need any money for the a long time)
BTW if you are Red Cross worker, etc DO NOT in a public place explain to your new worker how fricked we really all are. I was sitting right behind you on the damn plane, and I had no clue at that time, I was going to lose all my friends, etc. You did not make it better.
My life was never the same, I remember one day probably the next year I was commuting to work from my home in Alabama and pulled over on the side of the road and cried like a baby for 20 minutes. I am still not sure why, it was just all the loss. I am not an emotional person, I didn’t even cry at my father’s funeral when I was 18, and we were very close. Just part of the Katrina Craziness I guess.
The landing was just the start of the misery, it lasted for years. BTW Snake Farm is back at it again

The smell of the neighborhood was bad, but I'll never forget the smell when we were getting our refrigerator out of the house and it opened, lol. It had floated a bit and was leaning back against the wall. There was no way to get to the back side to tape the door shut so when we stood it upright, that 2 week old rotten water came spilling out. Lort that shite was bad.

I’m glad I was in my early 40s if I was going to have to deal with something like that.
21 years later, at my present age, I can see now why the then older folks took it so hard.
A bunch of them didn’t have a comparable experience earlier in their lives.
I got busy cleaning up, remediating and repairing immediately afterwards and by Day +3 I was mentally in a pretty good space.
It was good therapy but I’m never voluntarily going to work that hard again.
21 years later, at my present age, I can see now why the then older folks took it so hard.
A bunch of them didn’t have a comparable experience earlier in their lives.
I got busy cleaning up, remediating and repairing immediately afterwards and by Day +3 I was mentally in a pretty good space.
It was good therapy but I’m never voluntarily going to work that hard again.

I was in Long Beach, MS. Lived a quarter mile from the beach and on the same street as my mom, brother, and grandpa. I was 7 months pregnant with my third child.
I lost my house completely, pawpaws was gutted to the roof and moms was flooded to the halfway point.

Wifey (no pics) and I just moved back from Oz a few months prior with our toddler son. It was the wife’s first hurricane. She asked if all hurricanes were going to be like that. I told her hell no. A hurricane like that was a once, maybe a twice in a lifetime event here.
After Katrina, there was Gustav, Isaac, and Ida. Wife (again, no pics) is a hurricane veteran.

Same. Sophomore year at LSU during Katrina. Whole family back in Ocean Springs. No contact and couldn’t drive over for weeks. Total devastation. Lucky I didn’t lose anyone, but it was close.

Look, I get it, it was bad. Terrible even. But y'all gotta stop with the regaling of Katrina stories to tourists....it was a long time ago and I am sure my uber driver suffered from his mama not having enough formula but I'm going to tip you either way....the same goes for wait staff and bartenders....I'm going to tip you anyhow, and while I enjoy conversation with anyone I don't really know that a 21 year old whupping the shite out of a lowes bucket in Jackson Square was nearly as traumitized as he'd have that couple from Cincinatti beleive....enough already, we get it....and no one is basing their tip on the trauma you suffered during Katrina...in fact just the opposite is liable to happen. I love New Orleans, and as a native Atlantan I ain't supposed to admit that but I do because it is true...I love the people of New Orleans - I love conversing with y'all...and I truly hate that you went through it....but seriously, it was 21 years ago....and I am going to tip you anyway.....tell me what happened last week, its fricking New Orleans something happened that is far more interesting than Katrina 20 years later.....Atlantans almost never mention Sherman and even mentioning the '96 Olympics almost never happens....get over it already. Or not, but it comes off as a bit contrived 20 years later....

On second thought - As long as those fricking Mormons keep Y'alls NBA name y'all keep reminding everyone about the horrors of Katrina dammit. I know the 2 are completely unrelated BUT having an NBA team named the Jazz anywhere other than New Orleans, Memphis or Chicago is far worse an example of violating a social compact than a 30 year old busker outside of Rouse's on Royal Street, even if he did grow up in St Paul and only set foot in New Orleans 5 years ago, telling a group of tourists from Birmingham about his Katrina misery. I apologize...as long as the Mormons hold onto the Jazz y'all do what you do.....those of us with some sense of social responsibility will keep feigning interest and tipping....

That reminds me: Mormons came and cut fhe hello out of some downed trees in Slidell and they were a huge help on our property

Seriously I don't know how folks in coastal communities function this time of year. I lived through a couple of cat 1 or 2s in Charleston and have lived through big storms stalling out in or slowing way down in north Georgia and even that minor nuisance is more than anyone likes dealing with....but Helene broke me from dreaming about living in South Florida. Ice storms are bad....going without power at 5 degrees and 95 degrees is 2 totally different things....at 5 degrees its uncomfortable, at 95 it is fricking maddening. The next time they have a hurricane in my area I ain't participating....I have had a belly full of the damned things after Helene and it really was not anything like what y'all go through on the coast. I love the ocean but I can drive or fly anytime I need a fix. I am 2 hours away and that is plenty close enough for me....

Katrina didn’t affect us here in Grant parish,Rita shortly afterwards was a different story.
Wife and I are both nurses and happened to be off a couple days.called Red Cross to see what we could do,they said we would have to go through some kinda orientation program,would take a couple of weeks or some shite.
Said to hell with this,we drove to Pete Maravich building ,showed them our nursing licenses,they said come on in and put us to work.Helicopters were coming in for awhile bringing in refugees.then they said they quit because they were being shot at.
It was very sad ,lots of the people were shell shocked,similar to what I would expect of victims of a bombing campaign such as Dresden.I mostly just took BP’s and checked blood sugars.Most were very subdued.
My wife was assigned to deal with children,Dozens of unaccompanied children,I wasn’t expecting that.The children were like in a catatonic state,they couldn’t even tell her their names.
Spent about 36 hours there,had to come home to go to work.Our hospital got an influx of refugees from N.O so we had a busy couple of weeks.
Rita did a lot of damage in Grant parish and Ellick,mostly damage from trees falling on houses,we had no damage to our house but trees down all over yard and property.My neighbors house was destroyed by a large tree.
Electricity was out 11-12 days here but we stayed at my mothers close to hospital to shower and sleep.
We had several relatives and old friends that lived in N O and area that had it really bad with flooded houses.
It was a bad time for sure.
