He'll be drinking a lot more coffee in the future. Maybe see if you can find some good coffee for him....by the case.

You can support, but it’s common these types put pressure on and bring those around them down a similar path mentally. Don’t put it on your shoulders. Convince him to get professional help whatever that may be.

If he declines, disown him now. He hasn’t hit his bottom and will bring you down with him. If he wants your help and support, then you call the shots. Not him. If he doesn’t get professional help, your hands are clean.

AA is a cult for one. There are plenty of ways to stop drinking than AA.

Unless your friend truly wants to change, there isn’t anything you can do.

GLP1s are being looked at for a treatment for alcoholism and for gambling addiction for that matter. Not sure if it is currently being prescribed yet but the CEO at Eli Lilly thinks it will be. It kills the craving just like it does for food. It's a brain chemistry thing.

AA and NA is for some certain type of people. It does work for some addicts that are low IQ but mean well.

But most addicts one of their biggest downfalls are other drunks/addicts. So going war story and hangout and drink six cups of coffee with other addicts spells disaster more times than not.

This is actually a topic I can speak on fwiw

You cannot help your friend until he wants help. Trying to impose help on him will drive him further into abuse and away from you as the addiction hides the victim from anything that would threaten its control so to speak.

The fact that he called and told you that is a cry for help of sorts, but its not clear what kind of help he wants without talking to him.

Id be checking in on him routinely, not to push him towards treatment after you explain you're happy to help get him setup with something once or twice, but just so he has an outlet.

First of all AA is not based in science at all. The guys who started it were in marketing..

It has a very low success rate. It keeps people focised on alcohol completely. Sitting around dwelling on detailed drunken escapades in a group setting is ridiculous.

Declaring you are powerless over alcohol is asinine. Calling yourself an alcoholic when you havent drank in decades is dumb af. Like others have said. Its more like a cult than way to help you get sober for good.

Yep, making amends. A lot of people who make it that far at least have a strong desire to get sober.

Tell him he can drink as much beer as he wants, but is limited to two doubles of spirits, measured with a jigger, a night. It's an intermediate step, to be clear, but it's about progress, not perfection, for someone that is deep in it.

Not a single word of this is true. Nothing. It may not be for everyone, and that's ok but don't discourage a person who is genuinely seeking sobriety from going to a meeting. What if his friend is one who would really get it in AA and he never went because he read the stupidity that you have posted? Sometimes it is wiser to just keep your mouth shut

Maybe so and maybe we can talk about AA and 12 steps but:
NIH reports encouraging results for GLP1 in treating alcohol and other addictions.

If I was an alcoholic and wanted to quit, I'd talk to my doc about this

He has got to fill his idle time with doing stuff. Keeping busy can keep his mind off of drinking. He has to make a list a peck away at it, Tell him you love him and want to help him as much as humanly possible.
