Support him and help him get professional help. Hopefully he is receptive to that.

You have your opinion.

My opinion is that AA saved my life, any many others I know. Both of my brothers tried it on their own, we buried the second two tears ago. I haven't had a drink since my first meeting. That was in 1990.

Maybe bring a solution next time.

Something practical: offer to go with him to a beginners AA meeting. You'd go with him, not the other way around. It matters.

I agree it’s culty and the steps are a joke imo, but the fellowship is real and that is the most important thing to get from it. I’ve had a chance to reinvent my life and start over with a crapton of new friends. And service work gets you out of your head and even more plugged in. NA is my home and my family but AA is the same and I’ll go to those as well for the fellowship.

How so? Be specific? I can’t wait for your enlightened response.

I drink too much and have been thinking about putting it to bed. My biggest obstacle is when I get bored, I feel the urge to drink. When I’m busy, it isn’t a priority. Maybe have a friends only tradition

Are you in recovery? if so volunteer to be his sponsor he don't need to be patted on the arse and told how good he is, not sayin there isnt a time for that

I made 120 meetings in 90 days, kept my mouth shut and my ears opened until an old timer approached me and said i been watching you and you need a sponsor he was my 1st and only sponsor and was a hard arse which is just what I needed one day at a time has turned into 42 yrs

nobody gets sober until they are sick and tired of being sick and tired

If that’s the only activity you can think of that does not involve alcohol then maybe you need to call him back and tell him the same thing he told you.

Many alcoholics get abandoned by friends when they get sober because their friends think they don’t want to be around anyone drinking. The friends that drink feel awkward being around someone that is not drinking, especially when eating or at parties. Just don’t be weird about him not drinking, but hold him accountable if he continues to drink.

Be as supportive as you can be. But, remember this, unless you've had the same problem, you can't ever say you KNOW how he feels or what he's going through. You have to have been there to KNOW.

But mad respect to your friend for realizing he has to put that cork back in the bottle
