Crazy to even think about.

Sophomore at LSU. Was just out of the service with a medical discharge. I had stayed up til 5 AM, and didn't wake up til it was time for my first class at 4:30.
I woke up and campus was a bit of a ghost town. I had not looked at any news, and was wondering where everyone was, and had no idea what was going on.
There was a note on the class door that it had been cancelled. I wondered over to the Union and everyone was huddled around a TV. I asked someone what happened, and they looked at me like I had two heads. I watched the broadcast for a few minutes and was able to put it all together.

9/11 Thread. Where were you? What'd you do that day?
I was in my 8th grade American history class. After some commotion with another teacher, our teacher turned on the classroom TV and we watched the second plane hit. I will never forget it and I will always remember is like it was yesterday.

Was in Calgary Canada on business. Turned on the tv in my hotel room that morning and saw the chaos unfold. My 4 day trip turned into 13 days because of delayed flights etc.....That flight from Calgary back to Houston was one of the most intense 4 hours of my life. The Cpt announced before the flight that if anybody saw anything suspicious that we could take action into our own hands.

Hungover as frick and heard my room mates yelling at the TV. I then woke up and the awfulness set in.

10th grade English class. Remember we had some assignment then all of a sudden out teacher was like "We need to turn on the news". Turn the TV on and see the twin towers smoking and stuff. We're all in class like "I dont understand whats going on". Then they say a plane crashed in the trade centers and terrorist attack in NY. The teacher's jumps up, grabs her phone, says "My daughter in new york" and runs out the room crying calling her daughter.
Few people in our class start crying then the bell rings. Kids all up and down the hall way are confused. Some are crying. Some are mad. Every period after that was just quiet and watching the news. Some teachers tried to teach but others were like "If you have family in new york and need to leave to talk to them or locate them please do so."

I was a student at LSU. That semester I only had classes on MWF and it was a Tuesday. I had an appointment at 10AM (I remember the details like it was yesterday).
Since I had an appointment at 10AM, I decided I would sleep in (my alarm was set at 8:30AM). My mom called to ask if I was watching a news and explained that a plane flew into the twin towers. I immediately turn on the TV and it had to be less than a minute after turning it on, the other plane hit the other tower.
At that point it was obvious it was intentional. On the way to my appointment, every channel on the radio was covering it. Although it happened in New York, it felt like it was an attack on all of us (Americans). When I got to where I had to go, while waiting, everyone was around one tv. The receptionist was crying and kept picking up the phone and dialing.. Hanging up then dialing again. Her daughter was in the military and in NYC. The phone rings and it's her daughter, the relieve on that lady's face is something I will never forget.
Her daughter was with a friend just outside of the city, but she was worried about others she had served with, who were near the twin towers. When I was done with my appointment I was talking to a friend who had just called me. He had gone to class and he said his instructor came in crying. She went through her routine and tried to start class, but then told the class she was just going to cancel class.
If I recall, I think a lot of classes (on LSU's campus) ended up being canceled. For the rest of the day, it was not business as usual (with good reason). It was a sobering time. In fact, even here in South Louisiana, for at least the rest of the week, the atmosphere in general, was as if it happened much closer to home, but then again, it was an attack on our country, so it was home.
It was the first time I ever heard of Osama Bin Laden. I was aware that there was an attempted attack on the twin towers in the early 90s as well as the attack on the USS Cole, but I didn't know much about who was behind it, but by afternoon on 9/11 the name Osama Bin Laden started to fly around. At that point I wanted to learn more about him and Al-Qaeda.
Before 9/11 I never took politics serious, I was young and in my world other things took priority. The first time I was eligible to vote for president, I had no plans on going. My dad called to ask me if I went vote and I told him I was it, he jumped my arse. I didn't comprehend the importance of our political system; I was just young and stupid.. But like I said, after 9/11 it changed my whole outlook.. In term of my view of politics in general, etc.. So it did have a very small impact on me (I don't know if that is the right way to say it. I don't want to say it as if I am putting it in the same category as people who were actually directly impacted). That's my story.

I was working nights. I usually didn't wake up that early but that day I did, and turned on the TV just after the first plane hit. I was dating a girl at the time whose parents lived in DC so I called her. She was a little freaked out, and even moreso when news came of the plane hitting the Pentagon. Her dad was a lobbyist and knew a lot of people, so he heard most of the rumors that went around. One of them was that Al Qaeda had gotten hold of Russian suitcase nukes. It was a wild few weeks.

I was trying to teach a bunch of 10th graders about some English something or other. Our assistant principal came by and said, "There's something going on in New York. You might want to turn on your TV."
Turned it on and both towers were already burning. Five minutes later (maybe 10), we watched the first tower fall. Felt like puking. I remember one of my students asking, "Does this mean we are going to war?" I told him, "I'm pretty sure you can count on that."
Watched TV the rest of the day. Absolutely surreal.

I was a junior in high school. The TV in my first period class didn't work, so I didn't see anything until second period. The news was on the rest of the day in most of the classrooms. Pretty much didn't do anything in school that day except watch the news.
The thing I remember most is what was on TV the next few nights besides the news coverage; The Brady Bunch and WWE Smackdown.

I was stationed at Altus AFB, Oklahoma. I was at work in the supply squadron when someone came to my desk and said that a plane had crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center in NYC. We all gathered in the break room and watched in horror as a second plane crashed into the other tower. It was surreal to sit there and watch as both towers burned and eventually crumbled to the ground. The entire military went to DEFCON 5 after that.

on 6th ave and 14th street watching one of the towers fall .... it was especially eerie because you couldn't hear the tower falling.

I will never forget when the first building fell. I said over and over. "It fell down Oh my God it fell down. It fell down it fell down it fell down" I think I went into shock. Just kept saying it.

I had just finished PT(Pacific time zone) and was walking back to the barracks when someone mentioned that a plane had hit the WTC. At that point it just sounded like a freak accident. I was eating breakfast in the chow hall and watching CNN when the second plane hit. At that point it was obviously an attack.
Soon after we were told not to come into work and stay by a phone. We were finally called in that afternoon and worked until late that night bubble wrapping our equipment and loading it on to trucks but my unit didn't actually go anywhere for a few months.
Almost word for word of how things went for me that morning...I was stationed at Fort Lewis, WA.

I was in 6th grade and an office worker came into our classroom and explained that 2 planes had crashed into the world trade center. He then came back and told us the Pentagon had been bombed. Our teacher had siblings in NYC and DC so she was visibly worried. We didn't have TV's at our school so everyone just had a moment of silence and prayed. I didn't know what the pentagon or the twin towers were but I could tell it was a big deal. I went to a K-8 school and the school decided to tell grades 6 and up but kept it from grades K-5.

I know that intersection. PATH is there, and I bought my first digital camera at the Best Buy at that intersection in 2006. Coincidentally took pictures of the big hole in the ground where the towers used to be, and the PATH station in the corner of that hole.

I was working for the crappiest law firm in Lafayette. When it happened, they told us all to get back to work.

I was in 4th grade. Heard about the first plane on the way to school. Arrived and waited outside with all the other kids until the school was opened. Everyone outside was talking about what they had heard.. "it was two planes colliding" "plane accidentally hit some building"...
The doors are opened up and we all head to our homerooms. My fourth grade teacher had the tv on the roller cart on and was sitting in absolute silence, transfixed on the tv reporting. The second plane had hit by that time. School never really started, all morning was spent watching the news. We were dismissed early from class that afternoon. Parents came to pick up their children, I hung around outside for a while and started to walk home.
I knew all flights were grounded, it was odd to me at that age to see no jet streams in the sky. I was close to home when I first noticed a massive jet coming in extremely low overhead. The noise was shockingly loud given the rest of the world had essentially stopped that day and i had never remembered seeing an aircraft that low coming in from that direction. I thought one pilot had not gotten the message and was directed to make a landing at the Air Force base near my house. Ran inside and saw shortly after on the news that Pesident Bush and Air Force One had arrived at Offutt AFB. That was the moment I'll never forget
