Tapes are kind of a weird memory. I remember the first LP's I got on my own were Weird Al, Thriller, and Born in the USA. I remember the first CD's I got on my own were some cheesy "Best Rock of the 1960's" type compilations. But tapes...I just copied most of my collection right from other people's tapes or from the radio. I called the "urban station" and requested MC Shan/Marley Marl - He Cuts So Fresh on the radio and sat there waiting for it so I could record it!
There was also that weird period in the early 90’s when CDs had gained popularity but car stereos with CD players weren’t ubiquitous. So you seemed to sometimes have that debate on whether to buy the tape or the CD. If you a good enough stereo you could buy the CD and tape it into a blank tape.

Of course you had a "Non-binary" car stereo.

Poison was actually the first concert I ever went to.

Beastie boys license to Ill was the baddest tape ever recorded.
Not sure if it was my first, but none ever got played as much as that one did.

I had a ton of those white AC/DC tapes. Through the 80s, before the prevalence of CDs, albums (LPs and cassettes) were structured so that the strongest tracks would lead off each side -- Side 1 and Side 2. For example, on that Back in Black tape, the title track leads off Side 2. CDs eliminated that track structuring style, as CDs don't have sides.
I see a lot of people are posting where they bought their albums. For me, the Sound Warehouse on Tchoupitoulas was paradise. This thread is great.

This was the route in high school for me during that exact time.

My first concert was at age 15 in the Coliseum in Jackson the last weekend of June 1988. It was Poison and David Lee Roth. I bought the T-shirt that had that on it.
As for my first cassette, I'm thinking it was Alvin and the Chipmunks- Chipmunk Rock when I was 10 in 1982. I do know I bought Kiss-Destroyer and Alabama-Feels So Right 8 tracks in 1981. I bought them at Howard's in Meridian, MS.

I think it was the soundtrack to Ghostbusters. I too also remember buying Weird Al cassettes.

The cassette tape with the cord that plugged into the aux of your CD player solved the car issue.
