Tapes are kind of a weird memory. I remember the first LP's I got on my own were Weird Al, Thriller, and Born in the USA. I remember the first CD's I got on my own were some cheesy "Best Rock of the 1960's" type compilations. But tapes...I just copied most of my collection right from other people's tapes or from the radio. I called the "urban station" and requested MC Shan/Marley Marl - He Cuts So Fresh on the radio and sat there waiting for it so I could record it!

I didn’t buy a lot of tapes because we traded a lot and made mix tapes. I remember calling 102.5 with my friends and requesting songs or dedicating them to a crush, and recording it. That was like Twitter to us.
By the time I could go buy my own tapes, the world was transitioning to CDs and Napster.

Got a walkman in 1983 for my 9th birthday. Used some birthday money to buy Men at Work. Wore that tape out.

Open Up was the first cassette I owned, but my parents bought it for me as I was young. Interestingly the guy who worked at the record store -- yes an actual record store -- refused to let my parents also buy AFD for me because it was too vulgar in his opinion. Talk about getting blue pilled at a young age.
Those two albums are still my favorites to this day. I have AFD on Blu Ray Audio, uncompressed. Have come a little ways since those clear plastic cassettes that my Walkman would eat from time to time.

Aerosmith's Greatest Hits (Released 1980).
I bought this at a truckstop in Georgia at age 9 in 1986. This was the first tape I purchased on my own. I still love every song.

Ina-goda-da-vida-baby-don't-you-know-that-love-you....and then the tape player ate the damn thing. Poetic justice because I only bought it because everybody else liked Iron Butterfly. oups, you said 80s.
