First tape I bought with my own money was Run DMC, but the first that was bought for me was Beastie Boys. Speaking of freaking out your grandma, the first time I played Guns N’ Roses within earshot of my grandparents was not enjoyable for me. I had to go buy another tape after my grandfather ripped every inch of tape out of the first.

ETA: I just found it in my closet. I still have a cassette player, but I don't want to take a chance of it breaking. I played the crap out of it between 1981 and ~1984.
40 years - hard to believe it's been that long.

Yep, my first. I had my grandmother get it for my birthday. I think she thought I was telling her another language. You and me are having way too much in common. 1978...that would explain a bit.

Totally reminds me of my one other cassette tape story. Sometime the next year, 1989, my friend up the street calls and says gotta come over now.
I get there, he says his parents are gone and gotta check something out. Up to his room, and he pulls that tape out from the hiding spot.
Slaps it in the boombox and we listened to the whole thing. That day was a massive shfit in my understanding of the world at the ripe old age of 9.

I distinctly remember everyone in 7/8th grade holding up the cover in the mirror to see that the tail number spelled "eat me".
