So, serious question in light of the guy crashing on I-10 yesterday. Once planes like this crash, are they scrapped or are they repaired to fly again?

Just curious, whats the difference between a Cessna 172 and a Piper Cherokee? I know absolutely nothing about airplanes.

the position of the wings. A 172 is above the fuselage, which allows more visibility for beginner pilots. Imagine trying to learn to drive in a car with horrible blind spots.

Because she can, and clearly she's very capable. You can practice engine outs and typical things, but you can't practice for losing a wheel. Someone will be investigated heavily with regard to this though, whoever did the annual or recent mechanical work....
In a Piper Cherokee, worst situation I ever faced was having to land in the dark with no lights. Everything went dark during the flight and communications were lost. Luckily it was an older model with mechanical gauges and there were two of us. Used a cell phone flash light to see the critical gauges.

I might be biased, but I think every beginner needs to start with fixed gear, above the fuselage wings. And I have never in my life heard of gear falling off a plane. Sounds like someone wrecked that thing before she got in it or the parents did a shitty job of maintenance. Either way, a walk around should have clued her, or her instructor, into the problem. These are the things PILOTS are supposed tp prevent before they get into the air.
