17 year-old Maggie Taraska's first solo cross-country flight. Youtube audio of tower to pilot prep and landing. Was airborne and at altitude before she realized (was informed by the tower) that the right wheel was gone. Very interesting audio.
YouTube LINK
Both her parents are Air Force Academy grads - Maggie got this tweet from the AF Academy:
quote:
Maggie, if you haven't decided on a college yet, we might know the perfect place for you! ?????? #LetsFly
More high drama in this YouTube audio than any Hollywood movie I've seen in a long time. [Chopped onion alert!]

Awesome job staying relatively composed. I would have been on the radio “I’m so fricking fricked!”

She would have saved DB Sweeney some time and energy if she'd been flying the Memphis Belle.
ETA: that's amazing. overcoming an obstacle of that size at that age - she'll pretty much have the confidence to do whatever the hell she wants in life.

She sounded terrified at first, but became calm before she touched down. I say she passed her solo with flying colors.

Insurmountable testicular fortitude. She’s got it.

that was incredible to listen to. i teared up for her - hearing how scared she was in her voice at first, but she obviously was a great student with great instructors assisting her. glad everything turned out very well for her.

both of her parents are directly responsible for this near tragedy. She should have been in a Cessna 172, at the most. It was probably their own aircraft.

Just like a woman to neglect maintenance on a vehicle and then make a big deal about it when it breaks.

BTW, Maggie piloted again 5 days after the accident. And her goals are to graduate from the Air Force Academy, then become a fighter pilot.

She should have done a better preflight

She was never a pilot. She was a student, and she should have been flying an appropriate aircraft. She crashed a plane and survived, congrats air force academy parents.

quote:Silly. People learn to fly every day on planes much more complicated than a Cherokee.
