April 27. A rough day for Mississippi and Alabama. Largest tornado outbreak since ‘74. Four EF5’s that day.

I know how it feels. My sister was only 15 minutes S of the Tuscaloosa storm. I watched it all on my laptop on the 33/40 live stream.

I was living in Huntsville at the time.

Sat in a bathtub with a motorcycle helmet on.

We lost power for a week.

The bigger freak out was how close it came to Tuscaloosa’s big hospital.

I'll never forget the scenes I saw the next day when we went to check on my Grandfather's place on the river in Ohatchee. Just straight up carnage everywhere.

The old horse farm near Willow Point out with dead horses scattered through the pastures is one that stands out. As well as the elderly woman they were fishing out of the water near my Grandfather's place. Such a sad time for so many people.

When the weather started getting closer to where I live, I went to take important stuff to my spot in the basement under the stairs, looked down through the basement steps and saw a copperhead. Only time I've ever seen a poisonous snake on my property.

Opened the garage door and went back upstairs for something, can't remember what, but the snake was gone and I couldn't find where it went, so I was like, frick it, if it's still here we're both riding the storm out in the basement. Never saw it again thankfully.

This was on the Mississippi side before it got to Tuscaloosa

I used to do a lot of work in Tuscaloosa. When I went back for the first time a couple of weeks after the storms it was so weird. Whole streets of houses just gone.

Almost bought a house in that neighborhood back in college.

Storm took it down to the slab.

I was at work when it hit. We're just off the 359/59 interchange. They let us leave a little after 6, not long after it hit. Seeing what that storm did to the city and the great people that live here was heartbreaking. T'town will never be the same.

CSB from that day:

I have a friend who's in the insurance business in Tuscaloosa. So I didn't call him for about a month after the storm. Because I knew he was crazy busy.

So when I did call I asked him to relate one interesting story from the aftermath. And he comes up with this one:

They get a call from a lady who says she has storm damage. So they look up her address and put her on the map. And she's like 3 miles from the storm path. So they send someone out there to see what's up.

And her house has been cut in half by a 40 foot steel beam. No damage anywhere else. Just this enormous beam in her living room.

Turns out it was dangling from a crane at the hospital construction site. Got tossed 3 miles and landed in her living room.

That's all I got.....

I was about 3 blocks from it off of 15th- heard it come and pass. Took weeks, maybe a year, to even process all of it. Came out fortunate but 4/27 will forever stick out like a sore thumb on a calendar to me

We lost power shortly before the now-infamous Tuscaloosa skycam was shown on 33/40. We had no idea how bad it really was until the next day. People were talking about it, of course, but to see it on camera like that was unreal
