The new mayor wants the sheriffs department and the rest of the parish to foot the bill for policing that god-awful shite hole. They’ve been trying for years to get a Bogalusa city school system, absorbed into the rest the parish again so everybody else has to pay for that shite hole of a city. Thank God, the parish government has maintained its sanity.

It seems like he at least recognizes the shite show in his hands. And kudos to the parish for not wanting any part of it. No doubt he has his work cut out for him.

What little tax base remains is dying out so you end up with a crumbling city infrastructure,

ITEP screws over the tax base because the paper mill, which is really the source of the problem in Bogalusa, doesn't have to pay property taxes.

Hasn’t the paper mill been there for a century?

Bogalusa is one of the saddest places I've ever been.

Even the name Bogalusa is sad. A plethora of white single moms with mixed kids round there fo sho!

That’s because we don’t anything to do with it. Bogalusa was once the big dog in the Parish, but that’s not the case in 2024. What’s left of that old paper mill could shut down tomorrow and the western half of Washington Parish would be just fine without it. Why do you think the Bogalusa school system, which had been separated from the Washington Parish school board for decades all of a sudden tried to get back in several years ago. Bogalusa shouldn’t be a problem for the rest of Washington Parish, because it’s not 1994, it’s 2024 and the Bogalusa from 1994 is long gone.

Bogalusa would be much better off if the mill closed considering the new highway is coming. The southeastern part of WP is going to grow once the 4 lane is completed. It would be easier to grow if Bogalusa didn’t have the paper mill stigma. Schools aren’t the issue, as St Tammany is going to build a new high school in the bush/talisheek area to accommodate the influx of people moving near the new highway. School choice allows for kids in a failing district to go to other districts.

I’m incredibly confident in stating that this isn’t happening.

The feds need to provide assistance, but these towns need to fix from the inside.

To put it on a larger scale NOLA is a great example. The city needs support from the state police, DEA, etc but the root of the issue has to be fixed at the local level. You need local people to do that.

Is it painful and slow, of course. But the fed running things is not the answer.

I grew up in Bogalusa in the 1940s and 1950s - it was a great small city then - Beaver Cleaver-type place. I was last there in 2018 for my high school's 60th reunion. Many fond memories, but I doubt I'll ever get back there.
I went there in 1972 as a snot nosed 7 year old sideline urchin. Our team won, Bogalusa seemed just like the suburb I came from except for the smell and people even after the game could not have been nicer.

His party spawned and cultivated what is causing this.
—no, not the Democrats of his era. 1960 Southern Dems were not 2024 national Dems
