I grew up in Bogalusa in the 1940s and 1950s - it was a great small city then - Beaver Cleaver-type place. I was last there in 2018 for my high school's 60th reunion. Many fond memories, but I doubt I'll ever get back there.

The rest of Washington Parish isn’t responsible for footing the bill for Bogalusa, because that’s what will happen. The mayor of Franklinton is suggesting the same, simply because he and the chief of police hate each other.

Yes the sheriffs office will foot the bill, but they’d also be receiving the property and sales taxes collected, less the pension costs of those already retired out of the system. I live inside the city limits of Franklinton. There’s no need for a huge police force. We could eliminate multiple employees and let the sheriffs office handle it. As an actual conservative I’d fully support this, especially if taxes eventually get reduced. The new sheriff seems like the type of person to do it.

It’s not Rogie Magee’s Bogalusa anymore.

Isn't there some town in the northeast that literally has a golden retriever for a mayor? I feel like that seriously may be a better option here.

My guess is that WP will try to have Bogalusa given to Mississippi, no backsies.
Not even Mississippi is that stupid.

Think more Third World for a potential taker.

Thing is, it wasn't at the basketball game. It was just near campus. The basketball game ended and when everyone tried to leave the police sheltered everyone in place. No one at the basketball game even knew it happened until the game was over and they tried to leave.

Police said the officers in the gym heard the gunshots. The two victims, one dead, were students. Might they have left the game early and got capped outside?

The new mayor wants the sheriffs department and the rest of the parish to foot the bill for policing that god-awful shite hole. They’ve been trying for years to get a Bogalusa city school system, absorbed into the rest the parish again so everybody else has to pay for that shite hole of a city. Thank God, the parish government has maintained its sanity.

The city is unable to capably run a police department, school system, or much else. There is no one smart enough in the city to do so.

The only way to save that place is to let someone else - like the parish - take over.

Do the residents not pay a tax for police? That should transfer over.

Let me clarify. They don't want the parish to take over operations. They want the parish to pay for 30 years of frickups.

I wonder when schools will start refusing to play certain schools at their place…

Has already happened. And these murderers and victims were in the gym and removed for an altercation. Shooting happened between gym and post office.

The population of that city has been cut in half since the 60's. Its fallen from 15k to 10k since the 90's.

What little tax base remains is dying out so you end up with a crumbling city infrastructure, gangs and drugs all over, and a mayor that has no idea how to accomplish anything constructive.

Franklinton and Bogalusa have played each other in football for almost 100 years.

They will not play in 2024.

I’m pretty sure the WPSO already has jurisdiction inside the city limits of Bogalusa, they don’t have the same jurisdiction inside the city limits of Franklinton.
