Meh. Everybody needs to be legitimately cold, like nearing hypothermic, for a little while at some point in their lives. It builds character and also makes you acutely aware that being cold is fricking terrible.

Cool. You come deal with these kids then. I'll go south.

Hell no. I'm not even in real danger and I'm trying to convince mine to leave with our kids as well.

I'm about to be solo dad for 3 during this, but I don't really have any attractive move to make. I'm sure we'll lose power, but even with the temp projections it's hard to see it getting anything more than just uncomfortable.

Thanks bud. You got a spare house?
Someone at work just said now they’re saying it’ll be sleet and not ice which won’t stick? Is this true? Or simply not worth risking either way? Leaning towards the latter.

I live in west Little Rock. And on the tallest point of our street on a huge hill in the middle of a mountain.

Sure. Its not like I think its a deadly situation. But if they can be comfortable at my parents instead of uncomfortable here, I don't see the point in not going.
Plus it would remove a fairly significant stressor for me.

After 2009, I'll always tell people who are looking at losing power for multiple days in a ice storm to leave if feasible. It was miserable. We had a generator for only part of it. We slept in the same room, blankets over windows and doorways, super bundled up with candles to keep warm. Going out to the car and sitting in the car heated up in shifts.
It sucked arse. I don't wish that one anyone.

Sleet will make the roads dangerous, but doesn't typically stick to trees and cause power outages.
The freezing rain is what fricks up the power.

So pretty much an unremarkable rain event for the Baton Rouge area

I am so glad I didn’t have kids during the 2021 freeze in Houston. My house was sitting at 41 degrees inside. Wasn’t enough snow to even be fun outside

And it’s the unpredictability of sleet versus ice that’s got my stomach in knots. My kids will be so mad if we leave and the power stays on and they miss a week of sledding with their friends.
I appreciate the advice here. I will need to make a decision by EOB today, I’ll be glued to this thread and will continue watching for updates.

I have two gas water heater tanks in parallel feeding my whole house. Unless my gas supply fails I’ll always have redundancy!
Unless your water line freezes.
If you have city water or if you have a well and a dedicated 240v generator for your pump AND your water lines are too deep to freeze.
How deep is deep enough? I remember going over to Asheville NC and finding an area with no water. Their lines were buried to the required depth, but the required depth was too shallow for that very cold spell.

The weather is starting to look good enough for Central Texas that I may go to the lake on Saturday
