Ok, I'll take my L on that one. My wife would KILL for double barrel water heaters.

I have family in Oxford trying to decide to stay or go to Jackson. No generator and electricity/heat is their main concern obviously.

I sure would like one of the savants here to confirm that.
My family finds it amazing that I get all my weather and news from this website, but it's always tremendously more accurate and timely than any other source.

Are they elderly or have young children? If not, they'll be fine just cuddled up under lots of blankets with a fire if they have a fireplace. Otherwise maybe head to Jackson if I were in their shoes. Oxford is gonna get hammered a lot harder than the Jackson area will, judging off model runs.
I'm a sleezy insurance agent, though, so no expertise in weather other than my decades of watching these things as a hobbyist.

If you can, leave.

The biggest concern for areas with ice is having a secondary heat source, and I would say that it should be something other than a generator. The temperatures after the system moves through is the problem. We are forecast to have a low of 6° on Monday night where I am in north AL. Forecast lows after the system for us: 11°, 6°, 19 °, 20°. Those are dangerous temps, especially for the elderly and the very young children if there are power outages.
I would have a source of heat that I am confident in. Also, remember that the smaller you can make the living space, the warmer you will be. Open floorplan homes suck in that regard. Closing off doors and unused areas can help tremendously if you're trying to stay warm.

I'm 43. Been in 2 major ice storms in my life where we lost power for about 2 or 3 days. Had no fireplace either.. We just bundled up in a room and used a lot of candles. It was cold but we lived through it with good memories. I would only leave if the kids are very young or old family.

If you do this, turn the water heater(s) off and open all the valves/faucets/etc and the cabinets / closets around them. That should keep stuff from busting. Leaving it all blocked in with pressure on everything is going to bust virtually everything. It won't flood the house, but it's gonna frick up a lot of shite.

Agreed. But letting Texas in was much worse. Conference killers.

Drain the lines as well?

If anyone suspects their pipes froze, feel free to reach out to me so I can take a look and confirm.

Self deprecating humor is my strong suit. Mostly because I have so much material.

We are right on the line of slight ice to major icing. I don't know if there will be anything definitive for our area until we are in it, unfortunately.
I'm trying to convince my wife to take the kids south to my parents, but she is being stubborn.
