Theory on the next Saints coach and GM

I have a theory about the future of the Saints organization. I have no inside knowledge beyond some friend-of-a-friend connections to a few of the parties involved.
It’s hard to imagine Gayle Benson firing Dennis Lauscha and Mickey Loomis. They’ve been around so long, shared in all the highs and lows, and quite frankly know where all the skeletons are. It doesn’t help that they’re written into the succession plan as executors when Gayle passes away.
That said, it seems Gayle is growing frustrated with the direction of the franchise and is hearing the noise from fans and from players in the locker room. Here’s what I think happens in the next year or two:
First, Lauscha and Loomis move into more backseat roles. They can never truly be fired for the reasons above. The question then becomes: who fills the president/GM role?
Drew Brees.
His recent comments suggest he’s disgusted with the organization and the direction it’s heading. I think he’s starting to get the itch for something again. I don’t think it’s coaching—Hall of Fame / all-time great players rarely succeed as head coaches. They typically have better success in front-office executive roles. You can already see Matt Ryan having some initial success in Atlanta in his new role (time will tell how far it goes).
That leaves the question of who would be the coach.
Zach Strief.
According to my sources (friend-of-a-friend, though the degree of separation is closer than you might think), Sean Payton told Zach not to take any other jobs last year and promoted him to associate head coach because he believes Zach will be a head coach in the very near future. Payton is essentially grooming him as a potential successor if he doesn’t get hired elsewhere first.
Why does this make sense?
1. Zach’s wife is from Covington, Louisiana, and most of her family still lives in the New Orleans metro area.
2. In his retirement speech, Zach spoke very fondly of Drew: “My greatest drive as a player was not to let you down.”
He has deep ties to the organization and is very close to Drew.
If Drew moved into a front-office role, it’s hard to imagine Zach wouldn’t be one of his top candidates for head coach.

I'd rather him come back to the booth and replace Hoss.
but that's it.

That’s one hell of a theory

Drew Brees is not an empty nester, yet. Until all the kids are in college, he and his wife will not interrupt the family dynamics.

Jesus here we go again with the guy who has "ties to the area and team" crap. Basically hiring Strief means the organization is still stuck in 2009. Bring in someone who has ZERO ties, hungry, and dont take any shite from anyone. Doesn't have to be a former HC. Working out well in Chicago, Buffalo, Detroit. Ellen Moore is a pushover, soft coach. Plus bring in someone who can evaluate talent. I'd take a look at Louis Riddick as GM

Drew Brees needs to go away. Saints and the fans need to realize he aint walking through the door again. Remember when they got him and Payton in 2006? They had ZERO ties to the organization. Same thing needs to happen next time.

Saints fan fiction is hilarious.

Yeah. Doesn’t make much sense to look for ties to the area for one of the smallest metros in the league. Seems like a massive restriction of options.
As for Loomis he can easily have a role in the benson trust without being anywhere near football operations. I don’t get why this is so hard.

i don't see why this is that far from possible. Not sure if Drew still has his house in Audubon Place, but Zach's family ties to the metro area have merit. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing, but having those two guys involved again would instill some level of confidence in the fans that the organization was trying to make a move to put a winning product on the field. You see what Matt Ryan is doing...

If it allows us to run the ball and stop the run, I’m for it.

I don’t know why but I believe you’re onto something.

My first reaction was to laugh and ridicule you. Then I thought about it for a minute, and I'm not necessarily opposed to this. Strief is a super smart guy, and by all accounts he's been a good coach.
Sure, why not.
