Multiple media guys today like Rapp and so on are speculating that he's not going to take a job this year and will go back to Fox, and that there "doesn't seem to be a true fit for him" this year.
That would...really suck.

It was discussed but nobody knows for sure. Could come down to language in the contract?

Yeah that's the other component of this that is disregarded way too much. The Saints rights to Payton can be considered in a frozen state. No calendar amount of time can cause the rights to lapse given his resignation. This could be fought on either side

IMO if JJ thought he could get CSP he would have fired McCarthy as soon as he got off the plane from SF.
My bet is CSP wants more control of the team than JJ is willing to give him. Money wouldn't be an issue.

Sean does get to choose his destination, but the Saints also have to agree to the terms so it’s a two way street. To me there’s one of two options if he wants to coach next season:
We get numerous picks in a trade including 2 1sts.
OR
No room for negotiation, it’s just business Sean.

I think teams are balking for a lot of reasons:
1. The draft picks. Some teams value them entirely too much while others (Saints, Rams) don’t value them enough. Hell, some teams believe they won’t have to pay as much next year which isn’t the case if you’re the Saints. You’re still going to want top tier compensation and if teams don’t want to give it up, then they’ll have to hire someone else and wait another year or two.
2. Control. It seems like to me Payton wants damn near absolute control of almost every facet and I think that’s scaring some teams off, especially with guys with big egos like Elway and Tepper. Maybe even the Texans FO. I think Payton can rub a lot of people the wrong way with how blunt he can be. He’s not blunt on interviews because he likes to keep things in house but with job interviews and running a franchise, I can def see him laying out an aggressive plan to win and it can’t be done any other way and that domineering personality can be off putting
3. Money. Paying a coach $20Mil on top of losing first round picks and losing some control of the franchise to a guy who just quit on his team all of a sudden is a HUGE risk, especially for ownership who would be taking a huge loss if it doesn’t work out, a bigger loss than just playing it safe
I think Payton expected teams to just drool over him and bend to his every demand. He doesn’t have that kind of pull across the league the way he did in New Orleans. He should have thought about that when he quit. But Payton has always been shortsighted.

Maybe CSP and Loomis cut a deal to give Allen another year to see if he can meet the expectations of HC. If 2023 does not go better then CSP slips right back in with his GM and returns to the Saints.
