Payton saying multiple times that he wants to coach makes it hard to believe what his agent and or other teams are probably leaking to “sources”.

I can see this. I thought he was just ok so it’s seems plausible that Fox doesn’t want to throw massive $$ at someone who is just ok especially now that the new face luster has worn off.
That is essentially probably happened with Brees. He was just kind of meh and I can see why NBC probably had some buyers remorse.
Honestly it kind of boggled my mind that the big networks throw crazy amounts of $ on broadcasters and especially analysts. Are that many people tuning in bc Jim Nance is calling the game.
Honestly nowadays with the onscreen graphics with down/distance, score, etc, I think many people would prefer just listening to the sounds of the game on TV instead of some voice over guy telling us what we already see.

No. Jim Nantz is not a draw to viewers, but execs like to schmooze with guys like him and Tony Romo. And the NFL office places a certain value on the lead presentation of each network. ESPN got better Monday night games this year because they got big names in Buck and Aikman to replace the B-list crew they've had in recent years.

Reality is that no one knows on his contract if the years would roll over or not since he "retired" and I am sure the Saints are not interested at this time in a legal battle that isn't necessary since they technically have him for sure under contract through 2024.
Now, if for some reason he decides to site out the next two seasons, the Saints could then reasonably from a financial standpoint make the legal challenge that his contract should roll over into perpetuity should he choose to work in the NFL again as a coach or administrator (GM/President may be considered higher obviously, so you could not stop him from a promotion).
In the end, Saints' likely have a case that would at least send it to arbitration, which would potentially and likely result in an agreement of some form of compensation. From a legal standpoint, I would guess that allowing coaches to just bail on contracts and then come back with no penalty for breach of contract would set a horrid precedent, which is likely why the NFL pushed for Tampa to give Arizona compensation even though Arians was outside his contract time frame with them.

Letting him dictate where he lands at a salary he wants, and asking for multiple high value picks is a recipe for teams saying "yeh, no thanks... we'll revisit you when picks aren't on the table"

My understanding is he has interviewed once with the Denver Broncos, the Arizona Cardinals, the Carolina Panthers, and the Houston Texans and has not been asked back for a second interview. Colts are the only other team looking for a coach and haven't interviewed him.
My thought is there isn't a lot of interest in a coach that hamstrung his team before leaving. Also seems these teams are putting a lot of weight on Brees carrying him to that Superbowl win 12 years ago.
He is hanging his hat on a win 12 years ago.

What would be the purpose of bringing Payton back in for a secon interview? If a team is going to bring him back in then its going to be because they made the decision he is the guy they want and its to finalize some strategy details on how they are going to move forward. With that said, this meeting could be done without anyone having any knowledge of it happening.
Now, look at the alternatives teams have outside of Payton. It get really really thin with retreads and longshots. Dan Quinn might be the next best candidate followed by new 2023 media created favorite Dameco Ryan.
So, if you are an owner, does the price to pay in draft picks even become a passing thought when you look at the alternative if you do not take Payton? Sure it provides some setback for the team but nothing that cannot be made up in FA.

I'm not hiring a guy for 10+ million a year based off of one interview, and I doubt any NFL team would as well.
I'd say minimum of 3 possibly 4 interviews before pulling the trigger.
