Duncan: My intel says 50/50 shot Saints draft a QB in round 1, but not at 9

In his latest article he claims that after talking to people, he does not believe the Saints will draft a QB at 9, but that they will try very hard to trade into the back half of the 1st for one.
They just don't love the value at QB at 9, and the Saints just don't do things that way. They are more likely to take DL or OL, unless an elite talent like Warren or Jeanty are there.
They love Shough and Dart, allegedly.
Basically what we were discussing all day yesterday.
(the 50/50 comment was offhand in a tweet, I don't think he was giving an exact chance lol)

I fully expect them to trade up to 20 or 24 to draft Jaxson Dart.

Here's the problem with this. To do so would most likely require next year's 1st, which appears to be a draft containing much more talent than this year's. Why would you sacrifice a 1st in a more talented draft to grab a guy this year rather than just use the first you already have? It's foolish.

I really want to see this boards nuclear meltdown when the Saints talk Warren or Jeanty at 9 while Will Campbell in on the board.

Not necessarily. Using the draft pick trade chart, you could do the following trades.
Saints trade with Vikings and get Pick 24 and send Minnesota Picks 40, 93, 112 & 131. (Vikings only have their 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th round picks this year and are looking to get more picks.)
Saints trade with their buddy CSP and get Picks 20 and 191 and Broncos get Picks 40, 71 & 93.
It would be interesting to see if Carr could be traded to a team like the Colts, Cardinals, Vikings or Rams who might want to bolster their QB room. Not even sure if that’s a real possibility or not with salaries, injury, etc.

Nope! I think everyone knows this team needs play makers desperately. Of course, they need guys in the trenches desperately, too!

I don't understand the logic though...if you don't feel one is worthy of a top 10 pick, doesn't that mean you don't view any as franchise QBs? So why give up assets to get back in and take a guy you're clearly not that sold on?

This is what i would have an issue with. This is a fairly deep class at several positions on a team that desperately needs depth and new starters. So, our plan is to give up multiple picks this year ? I’d rather give up a a 2nd and 3rd this year and a pick next year. Giving away most of our draft capital this year just isn’t the way. Wouldn’t surprise me if we do this though

What they should avoid doing is drafting a guard at #9 in Will Campbell.

So I’ll take this to mean we are drafting a qb at 9 … damn it

We could only dream he falls to 9 … 4 seems like a lock

I and my team around me predict Jeff Duncan has a 50/50 chance at making more stunning 50/50 predictions!

Not the case. Let's say we went for pick 24 (Vikings), a common trade back spot.
That pick is worth around 740 points on this chart..
Our 2nd (40) is worth 500 points. We have two thirds - pick 71 (235 pts) and pick 93 (128 pts). We could give them 40+71 and it would be 735 pts....almost exactly the value of 24. In that case we would still have a 3rd round pick as well.
Alternatively we could give them 40+93+112 (500+128+70) and some future picks and get into the ballpark and keep the earlier 3rd but I don't like the idea of dropping two extra picks in this draft personally.

Do not give up draft capital for someone you don’t believe is good enough to pick at 9.

Sooooo as credible a source as Duncan, Underhill ad Shelter

I’d rather draft BPA, Tank, then get a QB next draft. Way better prospects

If we draft Jeanty at 9 I'll lose it
