In this short clip with Joel, Zion talks again about working this summer to become unguardable.

quote:

What I worked on [pauses while grinning ear to ear] a lot. Stuff to not only make the game easier on myself, but to pretty much make myself unguardable. Like, really, really unguardable. Like, no matter what night it is, making it look easy, that was my goal this summer.

I'm curious as to what this could be. The simple answer is 3 pointers or a jump shot, but even good shooters have off nights with that. What would make it look easy every night? Maybe becoming ambidextrous since he tends to favor going left?

The simple answers to me are:

1) Conditioning: being able to move at pace up and down without loafing for a full game

2) Pull up jumper

3) Relatively effective 3p (34ish%?)

4) More effective with his Right hand/going right

5) Draining FTs at 75%ish to make fouling him less enticing

6) improved passing efficiency

The only person who has ever played great 1-on-1 defense against Zion is Aaron Nelson

If he hit 3-5 pull up jumpers, where they couldn't drop 5 in the lane, he would be completely unguardable.

Everyone knew what he was going to do and they couldn’t stop him when he actually played last year. I think that is was he means.

Yeah, a really effective little pop up jumper where he makes like he's driving the lane and then pulls up and pops from 7ish feet would cause some pretty good chaos.

if he could make a few guys a game think about that and then make it even easier to blow by them, it would be a significant development

7) learn how to draw fouls, get calls, and make free throws - this could be 20 pts a game

He does need to drastically enhance his acting ability. He gets hacked like crazy but doesn't get calls because he's so big and strong and doesn't react enough.

He's gotta go to HardLn's acting classes

Can you be guarded if you aren't actually playing in the game?

If he’s on the bench, no one is guarding him.

He’ll be doing the same thing he usually does, bully his way to the rim.

However, he could easily have developed a consistent 3pt set shot at 38% and up clip, which he was just about at at a low volume.

We saw some actual turn and shoot moves in the post and a few pull ups in the paint.

I’d say that’s what we see, but with more polish.

I took it to mean that he is going to play more like Lebron and less like a Bull in a China shop.

There are a lot of different versions of Lebron and he chooses which one to be on a nightly basis depending on his opponent.

Zion could only really beat defenses 1 or 2 ways. Being unguardable means that he can beat defenses in 5,6,7 different ways. Sometimes it will be him scoring. Other times, it will be his gravity and IQ setting up his teammates.

That’s what I personally took from the clip.

How do you learn to "get calls" because he is drawing the fouls?

We're going in on year 5. I just don't see him suddenly taking a lot of jumpers. We'll be lucky if he averages 2-3 jumpers a game. But that's never been something he looked comfortable with.

Yea, that and just that little short 10-12 foot jump shot he'd do in the paint or baseline here and there.

Just those types of shots are all that is needed. A long range jumper would be great but it's not necessary.

But I think, we see it with Giannis sometimes in the postseason where he can be somewhat neutralized because it's everything at the rim but not much else can be done when they build the wall, but just the little short, 10 foot turnaround jumper can help alleviate something like that. Now obviously Giannis is still good enough to win a title and drop 50 in a title game, so not saying it's a stopper, but it's a limitation that does "work" sometimes. Compare that to a Lebron who can hit a jump rand a 3, and peak Lebron almost never has bad playoff games where he shot 11 for 29 or some shite.

Obviously that's nitpicking to the highest level, but I think it's fair because as an offensive force, Zion has the potential to be a top 3 best/most dominant force in the NBA, if not better.
