Well, AD just wants to win.. If we give AD a deep team and tell him "OK you have alot of talent around you, more than Lebron or Jordan ever had in their career, this is your best chance at a championship, go recruit that 3rd star, or stay with what we have which is a guaranteed top 4 playoff spot, we will need you to step your game up in the playoffs though, but you should be rested and healthy because we have plenty of depth to handle the regular season"
It would also make us more attractive to the other "stars" in the league, especially as a small market.. Nobody will want to come to a small market and have to try to carry a team, but if you have AD, Jrue, Niko, Randle, and another 6-7 solid guys (Payton level), that makes you a VERY attractive landing spot for a star.
How do you recruit a 3rd star if you are paying Niko $15M, Randle $12M, Lin $12M, Prince $18M...etc? The only way to get depth + 3 stars is via rookie contracts or being a big market that attracts vets ring chasing.

Not to mention that you couldn't pay Niko 15 mil and Randle 12 mil this summer. Literally couldn't do that. Not to mention, neither of those guys will stay unless they know they will be the starter/closer
You can make a trade and be super deep this season but you will lose that depth this summer. And won't be able to replace that player because you gotta give Payton most or all of your MLE or you will lose him too.

People on this board don't seem to understand the situation we are in now, AD has one foot out the door.
I think people do realize that. Part of the appeal of Beal is that he helps regardless of whether AD stays or leaves. With him off the board I would be pretty reluctant to trade the 1st. Not because I think the team will draft well but because stockpiling young assets are how you can get the next all star level player to add to a core of Jrue/Niko and what you get in an AD trade.

Trade right now for Lin, Prince and Dedmon and you could easily keep them around next year and still not be a tax team..
AD 27 mil
Jrue 26 mil
Niko 18 mil
Lin 18 mil (he wont get that)
Dedmon 13 mil (he wont get that)
Payton 8 mil
Prince 3 mil
That's 113 mil on 7 guys barely over the cap.. And that's just going off cap holds, no way Lin and Dedmon get that much, so we would still have enough to bring Randle back if he wants to come also

Maybe I’m crazy but if you are in a market that has trouble recruiting superstars then don’t base your model on recruiting superstars Build your team another way. The dumbest move you could make is to take on a huge contract of an over paid player who doesn’t fit in an attempt to appease Davis, who could very well choose to leave anyway. The best path is to shore up your current squad’s deficiency and hope it comes together in time and your health holds up.
Agree Beal is a fit, though we’d still be tiny on the wing.. Love, no way I’m doing that on the off chance it would help with Davis, which I have my doubts about..

Don't know if this works or not but here's my idea(s)
2 trades - 1st with Wizards & Hornets
Pels trade: Solomon Hill, Julius Randle, & E'Twaun Moore
Hornets trade: Nic Batum, Frank Kaminsky
Wizards trade: Markieff Morris & Tomas Satoransky
Pels get: Batum, Morris, & Satoransky
Wizards get: Kaminsky & Moore
Hornets get: Randle & Solo
Not sure if picks are needed here because Hornets are saving money by moving Batum and get a solid piece in Randle to pair with Kemba. Wizards keep shooting with Kaminsky and have a guy that pairs well with Beal in Moore. They then have a solid three-guard lineup when Wall returns. Pels get Morris to be a legit backup in the pecking order to Niko and a solid backup guard in Satoransky. Batum gives us the three that we need and by taking on that contract and moving Randle, Moore, and Solo we don't have to give up a pick
2nd trade with Grizzlies
Pels trade: Darius Miller, Wes Johnson, and a 2nd rd pick
Grizzlies trade: Garrett Temple
Rumor is that Temple will be a buyout guy so the Grizz at least get something in return here and a pick. They get Miller's bird rights if they want to keep him around long term.
Then I assume that the Cavs will buy out Smith and if I am the Pels I go after him (assuming he doesn't go to LA to be back with LeBron)
That leaves you with:
Payton / Satoransky / Frazier
Holiday / Smith / Jackson
Batum / Temple
Mirotic / Morris
Davis / Okafor / Diallo

For taking on Batum, Charlotte would have to give us a 1st, even with them taking Hill back

I like your first trade.
Then I'd use a 2nd and Johnson for Dedmon instead.

I would start Temple if we could get him.

42 finally posted Crewz' trade article. There are some interesting moves in there, all with the caveat that you have to do well enough this season that AD doesn't demand a trade this summer while also not blowing all your assets/cap space now so you can make another move before the 2020 deadline when there should be more sellers.
The trades:

I'm not sure if I'd pull the trigger with his injury history and this team's injury luck, but I like the Conley trade best. You get an All Star caliber guard that also would bring a lot of veteran leadership and toughness. The Pels need someone with those intangibles as much as they need someone with talent.
The trades:
quote:
Trade #1 – Short and Long Term
Hawks Receive: Wesley Johnson, Cody Zeller, T. Frazier, Pelicans 2019 pick (top-4 protected), future Charlotte pick swap option
Charlotte Receives: E’Twaun Moore, Julius Randle, Diallo
Pelicans Receive: MKG, Taurean Prince, Jeremy Lin, and Malik Monk
Trade #2 – Fill Holes, Go Big in 2020
Magic Receive: Dennis Smith, Jr, Diallo, T. Frazier
Mavs Receive: E. Moore, J. Randle, W. Johnson, Magic 2nd, Pels 2nd
Pels Receive: H. Barnes, DJ Augustin, Melvin Frazier
Trade #3 – Get the Star Now
Memphis Receives: Wilson Chandler, Markelle Fultz, Wesley Johnson, Pelicans 2019 pick
76ers Receive: Niko Mirotic and E’Twaun Moore
Pelicans Receive: Mike Conley, Zhaire Smith, Bulls 2019 2nd round pick (from Philly)

Please read the article to understand the context.
My overall premise is that you have until Feb of 2020 to sway AD and you also will get better opportunities come next February if you play it the way I am saying we should play it

Rule #1 in that piece looks crazy on the surface, but if people understand the long view logic, I think most will agree
1. Don’t Trade Solomon Hill this February, Do Trade Randle or Mirotic

I actually like the second one best but I’m also a fan of moving Randle and not Niko so I’m a little biased. I can understand waiting to trade Solo until the summer as he will be big a nice expiring.

Yeah this thread is fun and all, but you need to start the game thread sir.

I’m down for getting Conley. Wouldn’t want to give up Niko though, and I can’t see why memphis would want him. They would be blowing it up and wanting young talent, not another guy that plays Jackson’s position.
Posted on 1/18/19 at 9:07 pm to Crewz
I remember something similar in terms of trading asik the year before. Fortunately we were able to turn that into Niko instead.
Posted on 1/18/19 at 9:07 pm to TeddyPadillac
Niko would go to Philly. Memphis would get Chandler
Posted on 1/18/19 at 9:15 pm to BallHawk
Solo wouldn't be traded until Feb of 2020 in my scenario. Teams are looking for expirings in the summer. Almost all teams are optimistic at that point. Not selling
Posted on 1/18/19 at 9:28 pm to Crewz
Yeah should have thought that. Haven’t had a chance to read the article fully yet so I apologize.
I see the appeal but don’t think Demps will have that kind of patience. Hoping I’m wrong and he doesn’t overreact to the AD dilemma.
I’m also of the belief that AD truly has zero idea which way he is leaning. I think he loves NOLA and truly wants to win here but he also doesn’t want to waste his prime and with the people he’s surrounded himself with I’m sure the noise is only getting louder. This deadline and summer are going to be very very interesting.

AD in no way shape or form has his mind made up either way. And I don't think there's any realistic way to sway him to commit this summer. Your best shot is to be good enough for the rest of this year that you convince him to let you have a few more months to show him you can give him what he needs. Then, in Jan or Feb of 2020 you either make the big trade for another top player next to him or you move AD if your plans don't work out
