re: Biggest Mistake by Demps

I didn't think he would bust ( thought he'd be a borderline starter) but I did think it was crazy that people were hoping he'd become the next cp3.

I remember something similar in terms of trading asik the year before. Fortunately we were able to turn that into Niko instead.

For me it's more that as a New Orleans fan, I'm thinking of potential injuries. So you want to pull your guys as soon as a game is decided. Everytime I see Ad rebound in traffic I'm hoping he just lands on the ground.

Your points make sense though, and I think against a lesser team they would empty the bench sooner as well.
I like what he brings, still kept himself in good shape. He essentially can do what Asik did, with a tiny bit more quickness.

Just thinking about where we can get value/ address a need, i think it'll either come in the form of a big or a guard. Currently our defensive rebounding/ defence is the biggest issue. Having a high energy and solid defensive big will help us out the most given our shortcomings, Okafor seems to fill that niche and Diallo has done well as well. Playing small ball has hurt us alot on defence because our smalls are often not versatile enough defensively so we give up as much as we score.

Other thing we need is a scorer who can create. Easiest place to find that is probably at the guard spot. Hopefully Dell can find some value in the Euroleagues again.

Been watching Mirotic highlights to hype myself up for this move, you're right he's some nice guard/wing skills. Also 3s off the dribble, haha yay.

Also looking back he used to play with Moore as well, might have decent chemistry with a few guys coming in. Should open up the floor nicely for AD as well. On defense not so good, but given the other option was Dante I don't think the drop off will be that noticeable until we meet a good small ball team.

re: Buyout Bigs

I'm looking for a hustle big right now. A Steven Adams, Capella type that will bring D and boards and help keep possessions alive. Because right now, apart from another creator, that's what we need really bad right now (also hard to get another creator in the big spot)

Ironically Asik did that for us in bits and pieces when we could afford to use him. After Diallo's showing in OKC, I hope Gentry looks to use him in a similar way to how he used Asik. Look to give him 10-15 a night with teams that use hustle bigs/bangers off the bench instead of small ball. Minnesota is actually a good chance for him to get some burn if he plays against Taj Gibson and Dieng.

He's still essentially a rookie, but hopefully he gets a LITTLE better at not fouling. Honestly if he can stop doing that, I'll take him over Dante any time teams aren't playing small ball, because he doesn't really do enough on offence to negate the lack of defense and rebounding. In fact Diallo could probably score more if you gave him Dante's minutes (and he doesn't foul out in the first 5).

The other thing is, we'll need another guy to help box out and board to spell AD a bit, even when he's on the court. I saw the OKC game where AD was getting shoved around by Adams (he flopped quite alot but the issue remains). AD is already exhuasted, and with the team lacking any rebounding they NEED to find time for Diallo, or another big they pickup, because Mirotic won't do any of those things.
Honestly I think injuries (If you count Crohn's as an injury) hit him hard and kept him from giving anything the last couple seasons.

Honestly most of this is Dell's fault for giving Asik the extra year (the contract itself was considered to be an overpay but nothing ridiculous at the time). The other part is the market for bigs has just plummeted since GS won their first championship. MM has commented numerous times on how low the value on old school bigs are now. Think Okafor, Monroe, etc.

As a player he still had value to give at 10-15 minutes a night. I got annoyed like many did over the missed passes and dunks, but we knew that when we got him. He did all the other things we wanted just fine, not complaining and working his butt off, which, if you look at our team now we could use ALOT more of.

Thanks for your work Asik, hope you get a second wind in Chicago.
So you're saying that even if we got kemba for some unknown reason we would still trade him away? Man that's pretty low odds

re: Trades that bring in cheap depth

I think I oversold him lol, just had a look at his numbers and he's somewhat underwhelming.

Perhaps a slightly better Moore with better versatility on defend.

Oh well, let's swing for kemba then!! No point getting depth, we'll need starters/borderline starters.
Honestly I want a swing for the fences kind of move.

I assume we are resigning Boogie for perhaps a little less than the max, and that we are definitely trading our pick.

Can we get Wes Matthews? He's a piece I feel could be part of a big 4 when Boogie comes back, plus he brings defence + intangibles. Might have to move Moore as well.

I think you could get him for a first and a second, Moore plus asik, perhaps one of Jackson or Diallo, and perhaps filler to match salaries. If we have to move another first I'd do that too.

If Dallas can throw in a serviceable big I'd take that too. But you can't replace Boogie so wouldn't look to do that. Conversly getting serviceable bigs is very doable, sign Noel off waivers maybe, or pickup Bogut, it's not a stretch by any means.

Getting depth pieces imo won't help much, not the rest of the seasin nor the playoffs. Even before Boogie went down we probably needed a difference maker to really compete for anything significant.

That's my line of thinking anyway, get a starter then when hook gets back we're closer to 7ish deep these playoffs, and maybe we have a framework for when Boogie gets back.

I think Gentry get's worried about big's switching or something, which is why we see so much of Dante.

But hopefully this last game is incentive to give Asik a little more time. Honestly I think what he's doing now is like 80-90% of what he was doing in our last playoff season.

re: Turkish Hammer Time!!!

Posted by Tin_Food on 1/25/18 at 6:55 am to
I agree. I think in the right situation he helps one of our biggest holes, our defense and defensive rebounding.

Also I think the situation where he's useful also works out where you're more likely to give AD/DC rest, against bad teams that play hard and will likely try to win by out working us.

re: Turkish Hammer Time!!!

Posted by Tin_Food on 1/25/18 at 4:59 am to
He's way past being a sunk cost now, that ship sailed 2 years ago the day we gave him the contract.

I actually mean he could be a viable sub depending on the matchup, where we could win or stay neutral during that time he's on the court, if we lock in and play solid defence. I admit the number of teams we could use him against is closer to 10 rather than 15, but that's potentially rest time for Boogie and Brow. Keep in mind it would likely be against second units, so as long as we don't get wrecked -20 or something, I'd be ok with it.

Given our situation we'd have to give an asset to get rid of his contract. So might as well keep him unless he's moved as filler to make a deal work.

Turkish Hammer Time!!!

I'd like to take a moment to say that Asik's 5ish minutes on the court today helped anchor some classic 90s ball where we stayed neutral with the other team without AD/DC.

Give credit where it's due, Asik played solid defence and rebounding against Dwight, reminiscent of his time with the Bulls on the second unit. Props to Gentry for making that call, solid decision that paid off.

With this in mind, I feel there is definitely room for him to play 10-15 mins in a game depending on the matchup. He could probably do this for 10-15 teams in this league, where they use a classic bruiser big, or a hustle big that cleans up on the boards. Could be really useful against hustle teams like Brooklyn or Atlanta where Pels fall into the trap of playing down to competeition.

He could be that 3rd/4th big that could cut into AD/DC's playing time and give them rest, while also giving cunningham less time as well, which is a big plus in my books.

If coaches are able to utilise him a bit more, the trade deadline target (I'm 80% sure they'll trade their pick) is easier to shop for, as you know you're gonna get a guard/wing type.

We'll see, I just think that the biggest thing about our team going big is how are we on defence. Boogie and AD leave more spots on the 3 than most other teams, which is leading to a decent amount of open looks.

I'm wanting to see more of Clark and Allen on the floor to bolster the defense a bit. Biggest thing right now is our defensive rebounding, can't be this slack if we're going to play big. If we're getting smashed on the boards this much we might as well play alot more small ball and alternate Davis and boogie more.
Coach Daniel on Youtube

He's often on Bball breakdown's Youtube with decent analysis. On the video brought some great plays and style of play that AD and Boogie could do really easily.

I hope someone gets this video and shows it to Gentry and the Smash Brothers (My nickname for them and I'm sticking with it).

MM, in regards to the fighting stuff, do you do boxing or any sort of martial art? Or if you were to fight Mackel, just go fight club on him?

re: Tim Frazier traded for a 2nd

Hey MM just wondering, given your criteria for getting a solid player using 2nd rounders, do you think the underclassmen or draft and stash type player is a waste?

Or do you think a draft and stash is better than underclassmen, or do you it's not a big deal because it's just a 2nd pick?
