ESPN Sources: James Borrego has agreed to become New Orleans’ associate head coach. Borrego spent four seasons as Charlotte’s head coach, including back-to-back play-in berths. Pelicans are eager to incorporate his offensive philosophy.

Pelicans were able to retain assistant Jarron Collins, who was a finalist for Pistons HC job and now land Borrego as associate HC. Borrego chose Pelicans over several opportunities elsewhere to be the top assistant.

Finally we have some experience next to Willie

Can confirm Woj. Pelicans are adding James Borrego as associate head coach. Jarron Collins, who oversaw defense last season, coming back too. Willie Green’s staff getting stronger.

Interesting that Borrego was an assistant on the New Orleans Hornets during Willie's year on the team in 2010-2011, and Borrego was also an assistant with the Magic when Willie played for them in 2014-2015.

So, these two have a long history together.

Interesting job title. Makes it sound like they're not quite committed to Green and it sounds like he'll be coaching for his job this year.

Well considering we had 3 “associate head coach” titles under Alvin, multiple under Monty, I think it’s safe to say you’re wrong.

All under Dell Demps. Has nothing to do with this front office. They moved away from the AHC position when Griffin got here.

That seems like a bizarre take to me. I would assume that, since Borrego had several offers, giving him the AHC title was an essential part of snagging him.

Great move. Collins helped us to the #6 defense last year. Hopefully borrego can help us to a top 10 offense.

Side note. Griff isn’t fricking around this offseason. First he cans Nelson after a dreadful injury year and then he hires a great offensive AHC after a dreadful offense last year. Griff knows it’s a make or break year

Very good hire. Borrego is well respected around the league and had a lot of options besides us.

Here’s what we can hopefully expect with him on staff:

quote:

The Bird Writes @thebirdwrites

Under James Borrego, the Charlotte Hornets finished in the top 10 in 3PA in 3 of 4 seasons. In his final season, 21-22, CHA was top 10 in Pts, ORT, Pace, 3PA, and 3P%. He wants to move the basketball.

Fix the medical staff and that’s about as good of an off-season on the administrative side as we could have realistically hoped for

One thing nobody can dispute about Griff is he sees problem areas and tries to fix it, and he’s not scared to admit mistakes.

The guy has been a head coach longer than Willie. You can't hire someone as an assistant with that much experience without the AHC title.

Yeah those are good qualities. He just needs to cut down on the mistakes. I think the last 2 years have been better than the first 2 so hopefully that’s a sign he’s cutting the mistakes

Yea... And he might have the "Associate" removed from his title at the end of the season if Willie isnt retained. Last time I checked, the team isn't making any noise to give him an extensions and he'll be more than likely coaching for his job this upcoming season regardless.

We would have been if Ingram and Zion don’t miss games like they do, great hire but doesn’t mean shite if we still don’t have shooters and our star players aren’t there

Yep. Borrego could’ve went a lot of places. Funny he gravitates towards the job where the coach needs to win

Worst case for him is everyone is healthy and the offense rolls and he gets credit for it

Great move. The Pelicans bench gets stronger with a much needed offensive mind. Now get the training staff fixed.

Consider what Davonte Graham was with Borrego vs what he was with the Pels
