He seems to be mentioned a lot.

He’s so good, the band hired a Steve Perry impersonator to be their lead singer. He gets mentioned a lot as one of the GOATs.

“The Voice” was best ever in that range.

The Japanese dude they hired to imitate Perry was great.

I was a HUGE Journey fan in the late 1970s and thru the 1980s. I don't consider Steve Perry to be a top tier vocalist. He is very good, but not exceptional.

Great vocalist in what was a very, very popular band.
He does get a lot of mention in GOAT discussion.

Who are your exceptional vocalists?

He had a really good voice. Unfortunately he came off as muddled at times due to their engineer - Mike Stone. He was the same engineer and sound tech guy who previously worked for Queen.
If you listen to a lot of those two groups catalogs, you can hear a lot of similarities in their mixing. It's a ton of ambient noise and bassy noise.
In regards to Perry's voice, listen to how good he sounds on his solo album-"Sreet Talk" compared to those Journey recordings. The album sucks but he sounds good.
He was engineered by Niko Bolas and Richard Bosworth when he was on his own.

His voice was amazing! Steve Perry is my favorite singer/vocalist.

Top tier in contemporary music.

Because he sang for Journey. A band that was constantly slammed by critics and hard rockers alike.

I don't know how anyone could hear something like this and not think he is in the discussion for best male voice ever.

Ironically, his girlfriend that he wrote this song about broke up with him before this single was released, and we had listen to this shitty song over and over, which knocked him way down in my book.

If you watch the making of "We Are The World" and other outtake videos it's pretty obvious he's the best singer in there.
I don't know why Quincy Jones felt the need to give Neanderthal Springsteen such a big part at the end.

Because Journey is music for drunk girls and the lead singer was replace by a Mexican Asian who does it better than Steve Perry.

Journey never having a #1 single is one of the all time oddities in pop music. Open Arms got to #2.
