As I recall it, the musical landscape at the far edge of grunge was rich with half step notes and baritone voices. Thom Yorke came around and was singing in a falsetto, not seen since some early R.E.M. recordings with minor chords. From that "tree" came a barrage of higher singing styles, such as Coldplay. At the time, no one was listening to The Bends, but everyone loved OK, Computer, and bands like Coldplay, Travis, Keane, etc. burst onto the scene.
At least that's how I remember it in the mid 90's. Sort of a had to be there to see the refreshing change. Not to mention guitars and lyrics.

I didn't like them until I watched this In Rainbows from the basement video: From the Basement
Seeing them play these complex arrangements is fascinating. They did another video for King of Limbs, which is also good.

early on when this board was created I use to get raked over coals saying Radiohead is the most pretentious thing out there and aren't that great.
But I've come around, when they actually focus on making a palpable tune instead of pretending to be some avant-garde BS whatever, they have some ok tunes. Some hit but many miss.

You just don't get it. Its okay. There is plenty of music out there that I don't enjoy but I still recognize as creative, original, and interesting.

Great video. I’ve studied it for their setups.

That video is way better than the actual album.

I despise this line of thinking. It's music. It's for enjoyment and entertainment. If the musical notes strung together don't sound good to someone, that's pretty much all there is to it. There's nothing to "get". Even if the band were to sit down and have a 1 on 1 discussion with OP and explain all the nuance, all the backstory, all the planning, arrangement, composition, layers, and all the intricacies that make their work spring to life from notes on a page to the work we hear so that the OP really and truly GETS IT...that means less than nothing if it still doesn't sound good to the listener.
Just because someone doesn't enjoy the same thing you do doesn't mean you're smarter or that they've somehow not gotten it.

Not sure if serious

I think we are pretty much talking about the same thing here dude
"getting it" in my mind is your brain being able to make sense of it in a way that is enjoyable to you. Everyone's brain is different and processes sounds differently.

I never implied that.
I even said that there are plenty of bands and artists out there that are highly-acclaimed, and are clearly talented and creative that I don't get. Doesn't mean that those bands or artists aren't really good at what they do, and it doesn't mean I'm too stupid to "get it."
Sometimes it takes a lot of listening for me to "get" something.
not "getting it" =/= dumb or unintelligent
What IS dumb is not getting something and then saying that it sucks because you don't get it.

not sure I agree here. I think musically there are a lot of things that radiohead does that I think some listeners won't "get" from the way that they compose songs etc. and that's ok. understanding what radiohead is doing musically doesn't make you some genius or anything of the sort.

Agreed. I can't stand Radiohead.

That’s not the way I remember it. The Bends was a huge record to my recollection.

I would not say they suck. They’re very good at what they do, based on my limited knowledge in creating music. What they do just isn’t always something i clamor for. I’ve heard all their stuff and appreciate it. But i don’t go out of my way to listen to a lot of Radiohead. Other than The Bends. ThTs a great album.

Radiohead is terrible. People pretend to like them because they feel they’re supposed to. It’s as simple as that

Karma Police has been played over 300 million times on Spotify, but sure nobody actually enjoys it. Just people fronting.

quote:Not much. It's largely pretentious dreck. Wait until the Kid A fanboys show up to tell you up is down.
I don’t really get what I’m missing here.

I've seen this word used several times in this thread. What exactly is "pretentious" about Radiohead's work?
Posted on 1/27/22 at 12:14 pm to sertorius
ive always been meh on them.
People swore up and down they would change your life and when they are into Radiohead, they are REALLY into Radiohead.
I feel like its big in the Starbucks, apple laptop, black rim glasses crowd

I'm kind of neutral on them but my wife loves them. So we listen to them regularly and I like their music and enjoy listening to them but I never listen to them on my own.
