Just my theory, but I feel like the reason for this is casual people showing up to one of these sequels, seeing a really bad one and then losing interest in seeing movies altogether. Then it takes a really shiny hook like another known franchise to reel them back in. It’s a snake eating it’s own tail effect.

I know it happened with me with comedies. I saw three or four really shitty comedies in a row a few years back and I lost interest in the genre.

100% this. With all of the alternatives being given to us on streaming services, filmmakers had better give me an incentive to blow $15 on a ticket to go see a two-hour-long film.

Yep. Not to mention the options many have in the pirating world. Studios better realize and fast how to adapt. I'm not sure how, but we need incentive to drop all that money. 3D was a good idea because it gave us something that we couldn't get at home, but that was a fad and didn't last. Hell, even lower class families can still afford a 60 inch TV and can watch a movie in crisp, digital picture. I'm not sure where theaters go from here. Maybe this is the beginning of the end for them.

And the few original blockbuster films come from established directors who’s been in the business for over 20 years like Tarantino and Nolan. There are some very good young filmmakers today but none of them outside of possibly Jordan Peele have box office drawing power.

Wow. So audiences don't like rehashed stuff they've seen before?

I mean, it's true, but why is it surprising? The good franchise films have a creative vision and build on each other. The bad ones just meander through the same territory and hope to make money off their name.

Franchise films can have creativity like original films.

Depends on the original film.

If it's a standard Hollywood leftist/feminist/racial propaganda film, hell no I ain't going. And this is getting more and more common.

Most people don't pay $15 to be lectured by artists.

They have stopped making movies people want to see and have been making movies they think people SHOULD want to see.

My god this looks so bad.

And I admit to seeing most of these F&F movies in theaters for the cheap thrill ride.

The F&F franchise is one of the most profitable cinematic franchises of alltime in terms of worldwide box office.

Hobbs and Shaw will succeed despite some questionable plot choices (Polynesian weaponry)

the problem is not only on Hollywood, it is also on us the consumer as well.

noone can seem to just go see a movie anymore without over critiquing it, or going out of their way to find every flaw possible.

the new Godzilla is a prime example. the 1st one people bitched it was too much human element and not enough monster. so in the new one they actually listened and made it more monster centric - and people bitched there wasn't enough human element.

Hollywood literally cannot win with people.

Toy Story is about to kill it. We’re going to get a story about how strong franchises are not long after that is released.

I have a hard time spending more than the monthly cost of a streaming service on one film that will eventually be available on the same streaming service. There are plenty of good stories to find at home.

Theaters have become event venues. I need booms, shitty cliche dialogue, and popcorn to go, and I have no problem admitting it.

I'll catch the Moonlights and Star is Borns at home.

In a lot of ways I agree. I go to the theater to see larger than life films ; war movies, sci-fi, sometimes scary..I can't remember the last time I went to see a simple dramatic movie.

Interstellar, Inception and the like were pretty one off, original films and people saw those so it can be done. Hollywood just doesn't want the risk unless a name like Nolan is attached.

The problem isn't that those films are part of a franchise, the problem is that they are bad to mediocre films.

Endgame is part of a franchise and it made all the money. Captain Marvel topped a billion.

Yea this is never going to stop. The fact that a large number of them end up sucking doesnt mean they will slow down.

Half the time they still do well at the box office so theres no reason for them to stop.

bullshite excuse so you don’t have to get your fatass of the couch. Movie theaters almost always have deals to get you in for a cheap price.

Ehh. Now factor in the babysitter money and if your life actually corresponds to the day the “specials” are run. Tuesday nights don’t exactly fly for a huge percentage of the population.

He’s right. Unless it’s something I really feel will be an event(and mainly ones that the kids can see) I’ll just watch it at home.

“3D is a fad that passed” people are still out here sprouting that line despite it being proven false more and more with each year. In 20 years when 4D has revolutionized the movie going experience, you’ll be yelling that it’s just a fad with your head in the sand .

If people want to complain about ticket prices I can kind of understand that. Some theaters are just straight out overpriced. Now new build theaters with ample amenities or renovated ones are going to charge more. You want leather recliners? Okay. You want seatside service? Okay. You want the up to the minute sound system? Okay. That’s going to cost you.

Now you Schmucks who have to buy a bunch of empty calorie snacks and sugar drinks just to watch a 2 hour movie get no sympathy from me. Eat before you go or after you leave. You want a more affordable theater experience? Stop buying buttery salt and flavored sugar water by the gallon when you go.
