Worries of franchise fatigue are beginning to simmer in Hollywood.

As “Men in Black: International” and “Shaft” join the growing list of under-performing sequels this summer — an ignominious group that includes “Dark Phoenix” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” — worries of franchise fatigue are beginning to simmer in Hollywood.
“Franchises that don’t up the ante or bring anything new into the fold are suffering terrible fates at the box office of late,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst at Exhibitor Relations. “It’s not enough to throw a Roman numeral on your film, or reboot just because you can.”
“The common thread is these movies have not found favor with audiences or critics. That’s a double whammy that’s hard to rebound from,” said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore. “When you have that much available content at home, you have to have very compelling content to get people to go to the movie theaters.”
“The competition is fiercer than ever with all the buzz-worthy streaming content right now, so studios best bring their A-game next summer if they want to compete with Disney,” Bock said. “Otherwise, what happened to Fox could happen to them next.”

I mean, did anyone really expect these to have huge numbers? And if they did, why?

It's been nothing but super hero and recycled movie plots. Nothing original.

The problem is when they make 'original' films, no one shows up to watch them.

people love franchises when the franchises have a clear goal/vision (see MCU)
one-offs with no future narrative don't really do anything anymore

How can this be "franchise fatigue" when we haven't had any movies from these in many years. That's called "franchise forgotten"

Bad movies and diddling little boys did these in. That previous Godzilla was boring for 80% of the film, and this new one is bad from all I've read.
Franchise Fatigue would be Marvel films floundering. This is just shite films being shite

Geez. It's almost as if the bad franchise films underperform while the decent and good ones do well.
They're putting this out while Endgame is setting records.

I have a hard time spending more than the monthly cost of a streaming service on one film that will eventually be available on the same streaming service. There are plenty of good stories to find at home.
Theaters have become event venues. I need booms, shitty cliche dialogue, and popcorn to go, and I have no problem admitting it.
I'll catch the Moonlights and Star is Borns at home.

Do we really need some "Hollywood circle" or some research firm to figure out why no one cares or wants to see these movies??

Spiderman and Toy Story 4 could both break a billion dollars or at least come close. Episode 9 will hit a billion as well. Franchise fatigue is an excuse for lazy filmmaking.

bullshite excuse so you don’t have to get your fatass of the couch. Movie theaters almost always have deals to get you in for a cheap price.
It’s either the club programs for unlimited visits or specials at your local theater. The one next to my house does $5 ticket Tuesdays and I’m there every week. It’s not a shite theater either.

Busy summer and the dual sword of critics having their favored sons/audiences letting critics tell them what to think and see.
Until people learn to stop letting critics tell them what to see, then more studios need to follow Disney’s playbook. At the very least have some early public showtimes (two weeks out) to create some buzz for your movie from audiences.

Good point. I believe Rotten Tomatoes has far too much power.

All 3 will easily break a billion. Franchises work when the filmmakers understand what made the IP work in the first place. John Wick has gotten bigger audience response with each installment because the director and writer have a vision and they stick to it. Men in Black didn’t work because it was studio driven rather than creative driven.
If you’re going to evolve a franchise, take it down it’s natural course - the Fast and the Furious franchise. Keep your politics out of it (TLJ, Mib:I, Ghostbusters, Ocean’s 8).

Well, unless you're sneaking in concessions, you're still spending more than Netflix, Hulu, etc. costs.

Toy Story 4 will buck this "franchise fatigue" trend
As will, Spider Man, Lion King, and Hobbs & Shaw

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is poised to be the only blockbuster original screenplay

It's not. That's why it's audience score is almost 90%

Movie franchises aren’t really the problem.
Bad movies within the franchises are the problem.

I think eventually, the theater will be obsolete and everything will be streaming. You’ll see it first with dual releases both in theaters and on the streaming service for each studio. May even see a few studios team up.
