Star is Born was great in theater, especially Dolby cinema. Moonlight, yea that one won’t be much different

noone can seem to just go see a movie anymore without over critiquing it, or going out of their way to find every flaw possible.

Especially true when reviews are praising it, aka the Rotten Tomatoes effect. People still don’t know what the RT score means so they go see a movie that’s 96% and they’re automatically expecting it to be comparable to The Godfather or Pulp Fiction

Movie theaters almost always have deals to get you in for a cheap price.

shite I didn’t even know Shaft had released yet.

I saw the first one with two of my buddies. Fairly sure we were the only three white folks in the theater. Made friends with the fellas sitting behind us and laughed our asses off during the movie at the running commentary.

I'm very certain that I don't have the best home entertainment setup...
I have a fairly entry level 55" 4k tv (upgraded last christmas from an older 50" plasma LG); hooked up to an older Yamaha 5.1 1080 surround system, with cheap but effective speakers and subwoofer I got on a Woot! deal a few years back. To be fair, I did take the time to tune the speakers and layout, so it sounds as it should.

Cox Contour box with HBO, Epix, Encore; Amazon Prime with a 4K firestick (and now the Contour box runs Prime). Still have a PS3 hooked up to play blurays.

This is only barely into the home entertainment setup realm, and yet I really have to want to see a movie NOW, to find it worthwhile to go to the theater instead. I can catch most releases when they hit one of my channels, and if it's exclusive to, say, Showtime (or I don't want to wait for it to come off Starz to Encore) then Red Box is 10 minutes away.

Got my own hot-air popcorn popper a few Christmas' ago, if I want that stuff. Or I can eat something real, and/or enjoy a nice beverage from the fridge.

I fully intend to watch John Wick 3... in a couple months. Same for other flicks.

If people want to complain about ticket prices I can kind of understand that. Some theaters are just straight out overpriced. Now new build theaters with ample amenities or renovated ones are going to charge more. You want leather recliners? Okay. You want seatside service? Okay. You want the up to the minute sound system? Okay. That’s going to cost you.

Now you Schmucks who have to buy a bunch of empty calorie snacks and sugar drinks just to watch a 2 hour movie get no sympathy from me. Eat before you go or after you leave. You want a more affordable theater experience? Stop buying buttery salt and flavored sugar water by the gallon when you go.

What does this have to do with franchise fatigue?

The problem is when they make 'original' films, no one shows up to watch them.

Depends on who the director is. Nolan draws a shite load of people

Or look at Tarantino. I think it's fair to say that Once Upon a Time is probably the next most anticipated movie of the year aside from Rise of Starwalker.

Or Scorsese or the Coens. And I don't think it's a coincidence that the latter have done deals with Netflix. Streaming services have capitalized on the hunger for original content that isn't being met by the traditional studio formula.

Is red box still just basic dvd quality? I know some people don’t care about that, but I’d rather spend 5 bucks for the hd or 4K rental thru a streaming service than a dollar for a dvd rental

I've got a crazy idea. Make movies for your audience instead of what you think your audience should be.

Maybe anticipated isn't the most precise word to describe it, but I'd never underestimate Star Wars fan nerddom. The social media hype over the new Star Wars amusement park has entertained me.

I've never actually watched the F&F movies but they seem to get more GI Joe with each installment and this one may actually get me to watch it.

The problem is not that Hollywood makes too many franchises, its that audiences don't support anything that isn't a franchise. So audiences staying away from franchises doesn't solve the problem, it just makes things worse.

But I'm fairly agnostic on franchises. I like good movies, regardless of whether they are based on existing source material or not. Make more good movies. And audiences should support more good movies.

That's a very difficult theory to prove when you consider how few non-franchise films are wide releases these days. Just about every weekend since the beginning of the year, a franchise film/sequel has been the main release at the box office.

Since January, there have only been two major non-franchise films that have been released wide into cinemas - Alita: Battle Angele and Us. Alita was a box office disappointment, Us was a box office hit.
