re: Why movie theaters are failing. Yes, Hollywood is making mostly trash, but that's not all.

The TL;DR version is that Hollywood is fricking itself out of the movie theater industry.
It used to be that there were no ads before movies, just a handful of trailers for upcoming movies.
Over time Hollywood unions have demanded larger pay scales for their people, big name stars have demanded more, studios keep more and it all leaves the local theaters in the middle of having to come up with ways to afford employees, electricity, rent, etc. while Hollywood also churns out fewer things people are willing to see.
The need to generate revenue just to continue operations is why food, snacks and drinks cost so much as well as why theaters now do local ads before movies. Generally, ticket sales initially go to the studios. As movies stay in theaters long, that ratio shifts to the theater getting more from ticket sales.
With Hollywood no longer putting out movies good enough to draw big audiences for over a month (along with the quick move to streaming, instead of what used to be over a year for it to hit Blockbuster and far longer to go to HBO, Cinemax, etc), theaters really have little choice.

no reason to go back with trash movies and home theaters I don't ever plan on going again can watch movies on kodi when they are still in theater at home

I pick the 2nd or third trailer and go pee then
It’s a solid way to do it .

Adults (and young adults) know that the feature now starts 20 minutes after show time (minimum). But now we have the luxury of reserved seating, so that no longer matters.
Everyone knows that concessions are insanely overpriced.
Not sure why this is still a conversation or argument, but, theaters are failing because:
• Home viewing tech is comparable or in some cases better than the theater experience.
• Streaming has crushed the theaters as an alternative to newly released content.
• COVID resulted in movie fans updating and expanding their personal options for both of the above.
• Lower usage of theaters results in a downward spiraling of quality as they have less revenue to put towards upkeep, cleanliness, and staffing.
All of that, plus streamers aggressively taking over the studios to control the tap from which theatrical releases flow.
It aint't rocket science and it ain't "Oh muh gerd commercials and stale popcorn."

The movies start 20-30 minutes after listed start time for at least 20 years.
So, 20 years = "ALWAYS".
Got it.

Two things:
1st - Showtime says 8:00. The movie isn't going to start until 8:30.
2nd - Inconsiderate people on phones.
Not worth the $$

Depends on the movie & theater location.

I also just generally go to theaters a lot less than I used to. And it’s not just the shite quality of movies across the board, but I think I just have cooled on the whole theater experience as a whole as I’ve gotten older.
This is pretty much how it is for me now. The only time i go to the movies is because my two boys refuse to wait until it comes out at home. Luckily it's just for these animated movies that have come out over the last few years.

I love going to the movies, but people have gotten so inconsiderate of others that it normally just pisses me off more than the enjoyment of the movie. The ADHD generation can't handle a 2 hour movie without playing on their phones or talking during the movie.

We don’t go anymore for two reasons, and both come down to enforcement.
1. People spend the entire movie talking, texting, playing games, and scrolling on their phones with the sound on.
2. Kids are running around the theater.
Those two things completely ruin the experience, and there doesn’t seem to be any effort to fix either of them. They're selling an experience and it's lost on them.

i just show up 20 minutes "late" now to movies. you get assigned seating so no need to fight over your pick of chair.

They do this for college football games too. 3:00 kickoff my arse. At least the movie has the trailers and not just a bunch of crappy AFLAC commercials.

I stopped going to the theatre to see movies based off my last visit. I'm sitting there with the wife - we're both horror movie fans - and these punk arse kids are on their phone laughing and giggling, texting, etc. Their phones light up theatre. You can't hear the movie because of the giggling. We moved seats, but I told myself my days of paying for movies at the theatre are over.

The TL;DR was the eleven words making up the remainder of the sentence. If that's too long for you to read, a message board may not be the place for you.

Some gaslighting jerkoffs in this thread Stranger still, seems like just the wokies for some odd reason. Not sure why this is a hardpoint for them, but whatever
Your mind doesn’t fool you. Idk why bootlicking movie theater chains is part of their political agenda now. fricking AMC is now posting an official 25-30 mins of total movies & commercials between showtime and movie start time. That’s absurd. And a decent amount of it is commercials for concessions and shite. We all know movie theaters were on the brink of collapse post COVID and had to do tons of shite to make more money to survive - now we have the results. A seriously worse experience at far greater costs

It’s only some trailers - there’s a mix of trailers and commercials now
We’re probably on the brink of getting Dudley debosier ads before our movies

Agreed but AMC does say the movie actually starts 20-30 minutes after printed time. We adjust accordingly.
They actually adjusted their stated time to 25-30 mins now

I don't care about concessions, and most of your post is accurate, but the last line is dumb contentious tripe, typed ONLY TO BE dumb contentious tripe. I have been known to partake in dumb, contention tripe. . .we can smell our own.
If they diminish the experience, whatever the reason, complaints from paying customers, or even longtime theater fans, are a valid and acceptable response.
Knowing and understanding the reasons for the diminished experience does not make the diminished experience palatable.
As I used to tell my kids, "that is an explanation, not an excuse"
Be glad they are still complaining, for God's sake, because once apathy takes over it will be all over for theaters.
