re: Why movie theaters are failing. Yes, Hollywood is making mostly trash, but that's not all.

Every movie I've seen in the past 10 years has had ads before it.
But not back before 2010 that I can recall.

It's fine you take issue, but I don't understand the need to get in and get out.
Never understood wanting football games to complete faster either.
You work all week take in a movie on a Friday or Saturday night, what's the rush. Enjoy being out and not at work.
We wait all week long to watch our favorite team play football, why the rush to get it over with?

No one is eager to ease back and enjoy getting a barrage of ads, one after another.
Please.
Please.

I enjoy the previews. To me, it's part of the whole movie experience. For me, there is nothing wrong than an entire movie experience taking 2-3 hours. It's a time to relax and unplug from the outside world. I don't complain about pregame activities before an Atlanta Braves game for example.. it's the same experience in my opinion except swapping baseball with movies

Previews have ALWAYS been 20-30 minutes no matter the type.
This is most certainly not true. Growing up going to AmStar in Oxford, Alabama, I distinctly remember there being no ads before the trailers and a maximum of five trailers in front of the movie (three in front of a lesser anticipated film and five in front of a prospective blockbuster). It would take 10-12 minutes tops to start the movie as soon as the lights went dim.

Where does AMC say that?
PHM was the first time I've been to the theater since Oppenheimer but when I bought my tickets from AMC it did specifically say that in one of the screens during checkout.

When I was a kid in the 90s you had:
30 minutes of random advertisements for all kinds of things before previews (some local, some national). Also some trivia thrown in too
Previews would start 5-10 minutes after movie stated start time
Movie would start 15-20 minutes after stated start time
Maybe I don’t focus enough but it doens feel much different today

As a kid in the 80's and 90's, I know what you are saying, but it isn't what we are talking about.
You are talking about the slides
We are talking the full on commercials, followed by 30 mins of trailers.
We can pretend like it was exactly like that always, but it would just be pretending

But the thread title is pretty ridiculous. I get people want Hollywood to fail and that's fine, but in no way is ads being shown before the previews start a reason Hollywood is failing
It's ads over a blank screen. The lights are still on in the theatre when the ads are going. Just because the OP hasn't been to the theatre in 10 years and didn't like these "new" ads isn't a sign of Hollywood failing. They aren't pushing the movie back, I have no idea why this is even an issue.

I never said that is why they are failing
But it is an annoyance that diminishes the experience for some
My contention in this thread was with the gaslighting "always been like this" nonsense.

There are better theater experiences than what you’ve described. It sounds like you’re referring to one of the big chains…

I dont have a problem with them selling commercials and previews, I just wish there was a law that required them to post actual start times of the movie I paid for.
Doors Open: 7pm
Movie start time: 7:32
Its no different than saying a football game starts at 7, but gates open at 5:30

I didn’t know there were people who disliked the previews.
