re: Why movie theaters are failing. Yes, Hollywood is making mostly trash, but that's not all.

Previews before a PG movie suck. Previews before an adult movie with a specific genre (28 Years Later, etc) can be intriguing.

The first non static ad for anything but concessions I remember is before Tropic Thunder, it was for the Lexus ISF, and for some reason I remember it was a blue demo car.

I go less too, but occasionally there’s a movie that I want to see in theater, but will wait a while to see it when it’s empty.

That is always a nice experience.

8-9 of them is ridiculous. And they’ve all been posted here weeks or months ago. Plus the overloaded self promotion of a movie chain you’re already in, eating the very items they’re trying to sell you… it’s a terrible business model.

And a damn lesbian couple buying a shower fixture doesn’t help anyone.

I’m not paying crazy prices to watch a movie with shitheads on their phone and talking the whole time.

This is probably the least of the problems that movie theaters have now

People being on their phones in theaters has always been a thing since the early 2010s when the first generations of iPhones started to become more affordable and accessible to the public. This isn’t new.

The real problem is that the current market for movies is dominated by either high budget superhero films or extremely low budget horror films. There’s very little variety in genres compared to what was available to watch 10 to 20 years ago. And that’s turning people away from going to the theater now. The traditional mid-budget film was destroyed when streaming was introduced and now theaters are suffering because of it.

I personally still love the theater experience but I struggle to find movies worth going to.

One thing about the business model that blows my mind are the multiple late showings during weekdays. Feels like so much wasted overhead keeping an empty theater open on a Monday at 1 AM.

Except for Fathom movies. No previews. Start within a minute.

10-15 minutes overall—isn’t so much longer than the run time for previews of the past century.
