Is it a great Twist? Maybe not. Definitely not M. Night's best.

No maybe about it. It's an awful plot twist.

quote:

If M. Night had not written and directed The Sixth Sense before this film, it would not be viewed as harshly as it is.

False.

quote:

If another director besides him had made it, it would be viewed as a really good movie with a damn good twist at the end.

Lol nope. It would still be stupid as hell.

quote:

But since it is a film by him, it is judged against The Sixth Sense.

It's cute that you are trying to push this silly narrative. It's judged harshly by it's own merits.

quote:

Just like Signs is unfairly compared to that film. Everyone claims to hate the "twist" in Signs of the aliens being weak to water, but that's not the twist.

quote:

I'd argue there is no twist in that film. But if you want to assign one, (which people do because it's an M. NIght film, so there must be one) then it would be Gibson's realisation of what his wife's last words meant. Swing away.

That's not a twist, that's foreshadowing.

quote:

The Village doesn't have a terrible plot twist, but is maligned for having one.

False. It's a god awful plot twist that completely destroys the movie.

quote:

Donnie Darko has a retarded plot twist and ending, but is praised for it.

So don't compare movies you like to each other but do compare a movie you like vs one you don't like? K.

quote:

Go Figure.

You're not doing much of that.

It’s my wife’s favorite MNS movie and I fell asleep in the theater and then when we rented it down the road. Just didn’t care about any characters. Maybe it was just too contained of a story.

The reason the Village is stupid is because after we already know that yellow and red have no importance because it’s all made up by the town leaders, they show the blind girl in the woods and the camera zooms out and she’s standing in a big pile of red leaves. There’s even ominous music.

One, we already know red means nothing, two, SHE’S BLIND. She doesn’t even know she should be scared, and the audience knows there’s no reason she should be anyway. But that’s supposed to be some scary moment.

Signs was just an all around bad movie. And the whole aliens can’t be around water was so profoundly stupid, the rest of the love doesn’t even matter.

Let's do this...explain why it's stupid, and then I'll explain why you're wrong.

Go.

Admittedly I saw the movie in the theater and hated it so much I’ve never watched again.

But, let’s just start with the fact that the aliens supposedly react to water the same way the wicked witch of the west did.

Yet somehow, they managed to enter and atmosphere full of water and walk around on grass and crops covered in moisture making their crop circles then walk around earth with their skin exposed to the same humid air all with no consequences

But god damn, throw some water on them and they ducking melt.

The biggest travesty along these lines was the marketing of Unbreakable as a thriller

That was the twist

Not knowing it was a superhero movie made it that much better. The protagonist didn’t know what he was. It fits that the audience didn’t, either.

I just watched glass the other day. The trilogy as a whole is pretty fricking awesome, IMO

I understood the movie just fine. It's not some brilliant well done film. Sorry. Trying to rehab it's image here ain't gonna happen.

I can understand that. It's definitely much different than his other movies in that it doesn't drive deep into the characters, it's basically just a simple "WTF is going" movie that you watch to find out. I understand people not liking it but I'll watch Giamatti act in anything and maybe because I was living at an apartment complex when I saw it but the whole thing taking place at one was cool to me lol

But god damn, throw some water on them and they ducking melt.

This is usually one of the biggest complaints people have about Signs...the water. Well, the examples you mentioned are pretty easily explainable. For example, water in the atmosphere, or the dew on the ground...maybe that small an amount of water doesn't register for them. If they were to jump into the ocean, they'd die. Or better yet, if they were to have glasses of water thrown all over them, they get hurt (or die). But morning dew is located on the ground, and the atmospheric water is minimal compared to actual water.

You're also assuming that they a) have no protection against water, and b) have to be on the ground physically making the crop circles like humans would. For all we know, they could flip a switch in their spaceships and make the circles appear without stepping foot on the ground.

I've also seen people complain about how they are harmed by water but landed on a planet that's 70% water. But Earth is huge, and there are lots of gigantic land masses. And the oceans are easily avoidable as well. Sure, there are lakes. rivers, etc. all over the place but they are also easy to avoid. shite, there are numerous places in the world you could land and be miles and miles away from water.

Also, wasn't it hypothesized in the movie that the aliens here were basically scouts for their alien race? Or if not, that could easily have been what they were. So maybe they were sending messages back home like "Hey, this place is covered with water, maybe we shouldn't invade here."

Anyway, my point being that the water thing is pretty easily explained away. And that seems to be your biggest problem (only problem?) with it. Most people usually complain because they think it's an "alien movie," when it's not that at all. It's a movie about faith (lost/regained faith) that is simply set amid a backdrop of an alien invasion. And all the things that line up so perfectly at the end (Morgan's asthma attack protecting him from the poison, Bo's water everywhere, "swing away," etc.) are there for a reason...to restore Graham's faith. Because to him, it wasn't just coincidences, they were there and all happened for a reason.

Agreed. It was a good/cool twist. I love how some people act like just because they figured out the twist that that makes it a bad one. Also, I've always said that there are definitely people who claimed to have figured it out that are straight up lying. Sure, it's not impossible to figure it out, but these days basically everyone knew it and saw it coming, and that's just not true (especially based on conversations from back then on this board).
