The writers are also way too reliant on swearing as a way for the kids to seem funny and endearing.

I’m not sure it’s really meant to be endearing. I think it’s meant to be crude. They are orphans in a post-apocalypse world, training to be soldiers. Ellie has shite manners because nobody ever taught them to her.

Easily. So boring and they did the “kid takes a sip of booze and doesn’t like it” thing like three times. We get it.

That was just really bad. They could have sped things up and showed what actually happened to her friend. Now they’ll have to revisit that in the next episode. Snooze.

First episode of this show I’ve wanted to check my phone.

Episode started off a bit slow but the last 15 mins or so was great TV.

The show is gem in terms of production and acting so I won’t complain about any content yet - IDGAF if it doesn’t advance the story per se.

Not really a filler episode imo as this episode covered the dlc.

It could be the most faithfully adapted episode ever - the problem is that it just didn’t “work.” Yes we need some Ellie backstory, yes we need to contextualize her worldview. They just didn’t deliver that info in an optimal way.

The biggest issue with this show is the pacing and the stark sense of disjointedness. 2 episodes out of 9 are giant flashbacks where we don’t get enough out of them to warrant their runtimes. Every minute is precious in seasons with such a tight episode count.

You just don’t do an episode like this after an episode like last week’s. Last week’s was great and delivered a ton of new info while building up a tremendous amount of momentum as we approach the finale. The decision to bring that momentum to a halt for the sake of more backstory is crude and ill-conceived. They should’ve split the episode’s time between the present and the past, cutting back and forth between Ellie’s hunt for medical supplies and the Riley stuff. I don’t think it would’ve been such a drastic pace change-up like what we got. shite, they could’ve even spliced this backstory through multiple episodes and then capped it off here. When you end an episode with things in dire circumstances, it just doesn’t work when you devote 3-4 min to those dire circumstances in the subsequent episode. It invokes this sense of dissonance in the audience and makes them subconsciously anticipate the resolution of the situation while you’re trying to give them something else.

I’m just running my mouth and it’s easy for anyone to armchair stuff like this. I just feel like a few different creative choices could’ve really made this show shine. The episodes just don’t flow well together at all and I feel like they could’ve sequenced everything better

Another borderline useless episode. Disappointing.

It’s not that is wasn’t a good episode. It was, I enjoyed it. But it just didn’t accomplish much ultimately. And we got 45 minutes of Ellie and her friend dicking around in a mall for no reason. Sure, it’s nice to get a little backstory of Ellie, but it could’ve been told in a fraction of the time and we could’ve learned just as much.

Also, the gay stuff again. It doesn’t ruin things for me, and if it’s from the game then it makes sense. That means the game was obsessed with it maybe. But the show definitely feels like it is though, and that’s a bad thing IMO. It’s one thing when it at least seems organic. This show does not (at least so far).

On a similar note, the cussing is just weird. It feels completely unnatural and out of place. Someone said it earlier about how forced it felt to try to make Ellie seem edgy, and that’s spot on for me. It actually takes me out of things a bit at times because it feels so forced.

Bottom line is we basically only got two things advancing the plot: some Ellie backstory and her sewing Joel’s wound after finding some shelter. And we could’ve gotten all of that in half the time, and then advanced things more.

People like to bitch and say that criticisms of the show have to mean that people “only want action.” Which is obviously ridiculous. However, this episode was fairly boring to me, and the best part of the episode was when they were attacked and fighting the zombie IMO. It’s not that I crave action and can’t appreciate backstory (or flashbacks). It’s more a result of this episode not having much to it. It’s the first time this season that I actually got distracted with my phone at one point. Usually I don’t even touch or look at it.

It also felt like lazy writing in that they just threw random nostalgic shite into a mall setting (which comes with its own built-in nostalgia), and called it a day and expected to coast on that. And with so few episodes in the season, two episodes that feel like almost complete wastes of time is a lot, and it’s not a good thing. This is another one that had it come on the middle of season two or three, I would’ve liked it a lot more. But being in the first season, and so close to the finale, it just felt stupid.

I do really like the show. But I can also admit that it could be much better and the showrunners have made some bad decisions so far. I hope that changes and the last two kick arse. But after this one, I’m leery.

It's as though some of you have never met a teenager before. It would be weird if a Ellie, who has not been raised with great care, wasn't cursing all the time. Teenagers who are raised with manners also curse all the time, they just usually know how to code switch around adults. Teenagers cursing is the most realistic thing about this show.

I didn’t dislike either E3 or this one (both had good acting and tender hearted storylines) but the message is more important than a good product that’s the best it could be.

I am not going to run from something like tonight’s episode but people acting like those saying the showrunners detracted from the overall product because of wasting two episodes instead of just saying was virtue signaling just make the right wing snowflakes dig their heels deeper.

ETA: Witcher is a good example. They lost a perfectly good Geralt that loved the source material because the showrunners refused to stick to it. I freaking love Wheel of Time and won’t watch S2 because of the garbage product of season 1 and it has nothing to do with race or sexuality.

I’m highly doubtful for Halo S2 and there was 0 wokeness there, it was just garbage that deviated too much from the source material for artistic creativity. I guess you could call Kwan “woke” but they thankfully abandoned her.

The mall writing was beyond lazy. Just flip a couple switches and the entire mall works again.

Just took you right out of the moment and made you aware you were watching some Dawson’s Creek type shite.

Riley said she'd been staying there for 3 weeks. It's been working. Were we supposed to have a 30 minute explanation of how the power got hooked up?

Angsty teen lesbian tension drama ain't what i signed up for.

- Stop the gayness
- Stop the filthy mouthed potato head

It’s literally ruining what has potential to be a great show.

Agreed. It started with the boomers and was skipped by GenX and only to be revitalized by millennials & GenZ. It’s horseshite.

Dude. I’m a former Marine and we cursed from time to time but it was NEVER forced like foul mouthed Ellie. Growing up, if I cursed in front of elders or my parents it would have happened only that one time. Also, she had at least 4 different mentors, and no one taught her any manners? C’mon man… It’s ridiculous.
