The last two Star Treks by Abrams were 95% and 87% positive, and I don't know anyone that considers them great movies.
If by great, you mean a fun and exciting sci-fi/fantasy film that brings a rich universe the 20th century, then they're great.

Really? I read the plot, and I think it will be fine. Sure, people will be a little pissed, but I think the plot is ok.
Eh, can't really say much here, but a history lesson and repeating Anakin's turn to the dark side mistake is not the droids I was looking for... The setup better have a good payoff.
I am going into it hoping for the best still, but not falling for the review hype. I want it to be good. This could be one of those give it a few weeks/months and see if it pulls a Dark Knight Rises on how people view it.

I walked out of dark knight rises saying it was a big miss. This movie is about bringing back fun and adventure and love of characters back to the star wars world. Also setting up the chess pieces for the next two movies. Rian Johnson is writing the next two.

TDKR was awesome. This movie will be great.

From all the reviews I am reading this looks like the old star wars trilogies, not the CGI mess of the last three movies. I am seeing critics give it five star our of five, that is pretty rare for an action movie. Many say adults feel nostalgic watching it.

I would say the two Star Trek films were pretty mediocre.

More excited now than ever to see this movie.

This. I have watched the last two Star Trek movies basically on endless loop. Some of the most fun I have had watching a movie in my lifetime.

TDKR was absolutely horrible imo.
The first of the new Star Trek movies was above average. The second one sucks.
People who decide if they'll like a movie before they've seen it are silly.

Abraham took a intellectual action franchise and turn it into an action franchise.
I think JJ is more suited to the Star Wars universe because it is in essence an action franchise.

Thats actually a positive. IF that retarded magazine says something is bad it must be great.
It's really a shame, because Salon used to have an incredible film section. Stephanie Zacharek and Andre O'Hehir are both influential critics with distinctive points of view. Zacharek moved on to The Village Voice and now Time magazine, and O'Hehir is still there (and likely wrote the review), but he hates pretty much all blockbuster films, so he's not really my go-to critic for that kind of movie. He's much better for finding obscure international films or indie fare you've never heard of.

That's a good point.

The current record for best December open is a mere $84M. Even Avatar only did $77M it's opening weekend.
force awakens has already sold more than 100 million pre-sale.

I think $150M opening weekend is likely
so you think it only makes $50M this whole weekend after pre-sales? yeah i think its got the record in the bag.

I couldn't disagree more. The first of the new Star Trek movies has one of my favorite lines in any movie ever when Captain Pike told Kirk in the bar, "Your father was captain of a starship for 12 minutes. He saved 800 lives, including your mother's and yours. I dare you to do better."

We will know soon enough
ETA: To be clear, I own a good bit of stock in Disney and also have been buying Disney stock for my godchildren, so I hope you are right. I would love for this movie to shatter every record and the stock price to benefit as a result.

Thanks for being clear, I hate it when people are murky.

How did you become so lucky as to be the only person to invest in such a murky company? Please share your financial wisdom with the rest of the class.

you are right.
