the only character that really irks me is Chief Engineer Hemmer, and he's designed to be irritating.quote:
Not sure if that intended by the writers to set up what happens, but it sure played out well

A word of advice for those that have never watch The Original Series: Watch "Balance of Terror" because it is directly connected to that episode and you will appreciate this season finale so much better.
Just watched Balance of Terror. It's been 5 or so years since I've watched TOS. Forgot how great it was.
ETA: holy shite that was an awesome finale.

Seriously, I'd love for them to address why Kirk's Gorn was more of a slow moving powerhouse, and not the lightning fast stealth assassins from this series.
Nah hoss, you can't think of it like that, back then they had limitation and no CGI as it is now. So we are suppose to imagine the TOS series with Strange new world tech and realism.
which mean Kirk slow moving gorn was faster and stronger than what we see here, and Kirk himself wasn't slow but instead fast and gutsy enough to frick it up in hand to hand combat.
With them doing the prequel, you are suppose to super impose the weaker TOS production value and give it the 2009 treatment.
So that Gorn wasn't slow moving or in a hospice, it was fast, vicious and got its arse kicked by Kirk one on one.

I’m doing a double feature now with this episode. This is awesome, not gonna lie.

Strange New Worlds has been fantastic. They’ve done a great job reviving the brand.

Not about to read through the thread and see spoilers but is this worth the watch? Used to love star trek. Haven’t watched the older stuff in a hot minute, will I need that knowledge going in?

Apparently if you have Amazon Prime you can get Paramount+ for $0.99 for two months to try it out.

There are some callbacks, but you could also enjoy it without watching the old series. The only possible exceptions are the pilot (The Cage), Balance of Terror (for the most recent episode) and The Menagerie.

My God. What a fantastic finale. One of the best hours of TV this year.

Awesome is a good word for it. It was tied in beautifully to the original episode.
I actually watched the Strange New Worlds
Episode first, and then went back.
One thing I was left wondering, did they use the actor that plays Serak on Discovery to play the Romulan ala Mark Lenard?

The finale was awesome. What a way to end the 1st season. I am really looking forward to season two. I am very thankful for this show and how they have turned it back around to what Star Trek should be, IMO.

Just in the limited time we've seen them, I really think they should've casted the actor playing Sam Kirk as James Kirk. The guy playing James T now just doesn't give me any kind of maverick vibes.

Just got done watching the first season and was very impressed, this feels like the truest "Trek" series since DS9/Voyager. I'd give it a 9/10 with solid hopes for Season 2.
Woke material was at a minimum and not terribly noticeable (except for the demographics of the admirals and some of Ortega's character and Kirk's relatively weak character).
Return to episodic screen writing is great.
Deep exploration of the characters and returns to a sense of exploration instead of over relying on CGI. I think Spock and Captain Pike's characters do the best acting job. Really a fan of all the characters except Ortega. The chief medical officer is hard to understand sometimes though.
Their interpretation of the Gorn was a bit over the top though. How would Captain Kirk be able to win a fist fight with an adult Gorn? How could Gorn build their own spaceships when they just look like vicious monsters only interested in eating other things?
I think my favorite episodes were the finale and the comet episode.

I enjoyed about the first half of so of the season then someone in my family pointed out the ridiculousness of Captain Pike's hair, and it just takes me out of the entire thing now
