It's rare to see a new series launch so very well. Very old-school Star Trek.

This. After Picard and Disvoery, and the way shows are done now overall, I've been extremely happy that Strange New Worlds has gone back to the more episodic way of doing things. Does it have the underlying story of Pike and his fate? Sure. But the single-episode, contained story lines is the Trek I think a lot of us have been waiting for for almost 2 decades now.

they showed pike in his wheelchair in the first episode. The reason it could be confusing if you don’t know the story is that pike keeps saying he saw his own death, which isn’t really true
I think that he referred to it as his death, or transitioning into an existence that he wouldn't consider living. Something like that.

But since then he considers it a death.

And the more we come to love this character, the higher we regard The Menagerie.

Episode 3 dropped today.

It Looks like Dr. Bashir (DS9) was not the first Genetically enhanced person to lie about their status to get into Starfleet. We also see another use of the Transporter to see a person kept in stasis.

I won't go into details until more watch. I know there will be those on this thread that will connect it to modern events but these are tropes Star Trek has used in the past.

Also, Number 1 had a little tweak to her appearance that really made her look more attractive than she already is.

It's almost like Star Trek from the beginning sometimes used social commentary in the guise of a Sci-Fi show.

As much as I like it I can't believe they went from two hot Uhura to this one. Like WTF? She was sexy and intelligent not...this.

Episode 4 dropped.

Another solid episode. We get to see the Enterprise in a serious combat situation where the tactical skills of the crew are challenged.

This show continues to be a pleasant surprise.

Great episode 4 that’s reminiscent of the original series episode, “Balance of Terror.”

This series is hitting all the right notes, with few errors.

Episode 4 was damn great. After Discovery and Picard I wasn't sure how a dark violent episode would be in this series. They knocked it out of the park.

This show is awesome. It’s everything we all wanted from a new ST series.

Indeed. I think it was mentioned in this or another ST series thread but one of the many things that this show has gotten right that other recent ST series haven't is that is the ensemble cast. Obviously Pike is the lead and the main character, but they've done a good job of showing us the background/motivations/personality of the rest of the crew so that I actually care about them.

Is every episode going to follow the formula of "look how the crew member of the week solves the problem."

Week 2: Uhura
Week 3: Una
Week 4: La'An
Week 5: Ortegas(?)

You know what I love about Pike? He trusts his fricking crew. His security chief yells, "SHIELDS UP NOW" to him over her communicator and he fricking gives the command. He doesn't ask for a status report or ask, "Worf/Scotty, what's going on there?" He's fricking on it.

If you watch the after-show with Wesley Crusher, the writers and show-runners are taking great care to clean up as much of the inconsistencies as they can while also giving the proper nod to what made TOS great. On this episode in particular, the writer talked about how he watched and researched a lot of submarine wartime movies to help put this episode together.
