My only criticism is the slower paced scenes take away from the brilliant action scenes. This series genuinely has the feel of old school Star Trek and that’s a very good thing.

This is a nice change of pace after suffering through the rest of Picard

Better than expected. The woke cast doesn’t cop attitudes and preach. All, surprisingly, likeable.

Well written and light. Will watch more.

The new Spock growing on me but Anson Moint needs to somehow rediscover his Southern accent from Hell on a Wheels. Lol

Wow and a touch of Close Encounters toning.

And, do y’all feel a touch of Firefly? Pike = Malcolm Reynolds?

Picard didn't start off woke so I'm not going to give them a pass yet

When does season 3 of The Orville come out so I can watch some real trek?

I just started watching this the other day and it was driving me nuts trying to figure out who it was playing his ex wife. I finally had to look it up and it's the girl who was in Friday Night Lights. She looks a bit different now but still pretty pleasant to look at

There's a right way to write diversity.
Arcane and now Strange New Worlds are doing it right .

Bro the last 2 episodes of Picard made me fricking vomit.

They fricking retconned TNG to shite, I can't believe I sat through that train wreck.

I felt bad for Patrick Stewart. This should have been one last mission and a nice send off. Instead we get a few episodes about Immigration and the evil white agent who didn't know spanish

One advantage Pike has is knowing that his fate is 10 years out means he can take chances that he would otherwise not take.

although the mystical ore thing was pretty lame, this plot point is clever. Also, now he knows he’s got a grim fate, but we know he gets a second chance.

Pretty cool

If I recall, in The Cage — the two-episode pilot for TOS — Pike does not die. Pike just gets blasted and fricked up pretty bad but survives only to be sent back to that brainiac race where he rejoins the equally messed up blonde love interest.

Then the pilot was enough of a hit and they had to continue the series with a new captain — enter James Tiberius Kirk.

Or was it in a flashback episode The Menagerie when Spock is on trial for Pikes return to the planet. Memory a little foggy but all good episodes. And Pike does not die on camera.

Just scanned the pilot “The Cage” and then the two-part “The Menagerie” that was a flashback or sorts. Pike did not die from the radiation exposure 10 years in the future.

He was brought back to Talos 4 and the home of the brainiac illusionists and the hot young Susan Oliver.

I wonder if the writers of this iteration of Star Trek will give Pike a similar and suitable fate?

In the original cut of "The Cage","Vina" was shown to Pike as she truly was which was terribly disfigured. The Brainiacs of Talos 4 actually created a duplicate Pike so Vina could live out her life with an imaginary Pike as a companion.

In the Menagerie, they took out the "duplicate Pike" element and replaced it with Spock delivering the horribly disfigured Pike to spend his days with Vina, both with the illusion of being healthy.

yes that’s right
Spock basically kidnapped pike to bring him back to Talos, which had been forbidden to visit since he was there originally

so I just finished Ep1, really liked it. Like everyone has said it feels like Star Trek. I may have to add P+ to my account

For anyone here that has MeTV the second episode of the Mengarie is on at 11:00 PM Eastern time tonight.

And to verify something the last few posters have mentioned, Pike doesn't die from the accident and winds up being taken to Talos IV to live out his life within the illusions they can create in the TOS timeline

they showed pike in his wheelchair in the first episode. The reason it could be confusing if you don’t know the story is that pike keeps saying he saw his own death, which isn’t really true

Discovery went out of its way to cast ugly, fat freaks.

I kid you not… while I was watching Discovery, my son, who doesn’t really know much at all about Star Trek, watched for about five minutes and said, “I think this is a show for ugly people,” and walked off.
