Is every episode going to follow the formula of "look how the crew member of the week solves the problem."

Week 2: Uhura
Week 3: Una
Week 4: La'An
Week 5: Ortegas(?)

It's miles better than, look who solves the problem this week:

Week 2: Burnham
Week 3: Burnham
Week 4: Burnham
Week 5: Burnham

Episode 4 felt more like a real Star Trek episode than anything since TNG and DS9 ended. All 4 episodes have been great, but this one just had it all, including Deneva vides during the away mission.

It's probably way too early, only 4 episodes and an arc in Discovery, but Pike is already my 3rd favorite captain.

I’m going to watch today. Everything I’ve read online about the show is at odds with this thread. The consensus seems to be that the show has pretty clear underlying woke messaging and well, that’s just the way Star Trek is so deal with it, Trumpers

I’m hoping y’all are correct and this show is truly a return to TNG quality Star Trek and not woke fantasies.

If you count more women on the bridge than men and there being a couple of androgynous/non-binary characters as woke agenda, then maybe you'll have an issue. Other than that it's just pure Star Trek.

It was closer to pure Star Trek than fans of the series have seen in a while, but there were definitely some instances of woke messaging. Saying “crew persons” instead of “crewman” for example. Overall, other than your typical yasss queen bullshite, I didn’t find it to be too in your face and I’ll continue to watch. I give it a solid B for now.

I mean, it's just not (yet) as in-your face as it was in Picard or Discovery. We haven't seen Stacy Abrams on screen nor do we have Guinan complaining about racism or evil white ICE agents arresting hispanic doctors.

I have been holding off responding tho this thread since the show came out, but four episodes in I think it is safe to say (knock on wood) that this is going to be a good show. I have loved every series up to Picard and Discovery. I couldn't finish Picard season 1 and tried like hell to get through Discovery, but couldn't get through the fourth season (Pike/Spock/etc. made it mostly watchable in season two) because of all of the 'in your face' woke BS. I thought Anson Mount was a really good Captain Pike in season two of Discovery, so I gave it a shot. I am pleasantly surprised. It brings back the episodic version of Star Trek in a good way. 'Starfleet' acts like 'Starfleet' again of the TOS/TNG series. So far they don't have a need to shove shite down your throat, like Picard/Discovery. Hopefully they will continue this, as it has been a long time since we had a good Star Trek show.

I should have expounded on this earlier. What I mean by that is they are not highlighting everyone's differences and how 'special' some of them are. Everyone does their job and things get done. Yes, there are different types of people/species in the crew, but it isn't highlighted and made to be a focal point or a badge of honor, like it is in Picard/Discovery.

Episode 5 Dropped.

A playful episode which used some TOS classic sounds that made it a fun ep. to watch.

Episode 5 is a shore leave episode, and it has a classic comedic device built into it. I thought it was fun. No life-threatening heroics there, but a few characters got to stretch their legs a bit. Pacing/character development episode.

Agree about Episode 5. Followed the traditional series TV mantra of having a “light” episode after an intense one. Really enjoying this series so far.

Really enjoyed this episode. Some funny scenes. They better not be setting Nurse Chapel up as bisexual.

Another great episode. They're really honoring Majel Barrett by expanding her two STOL characters into really interesting people. I winced when Ortegas was introduced in the first episode, but they're not hitting on her assumed sexual preference. She's as likable as Chapel, Pike, and the rest of the crew. The doctor is fairly cardboard, but the only character that really irks me is Chief Engineer Hemmer, and he's designed to be irritating.

It was a light and fun episode. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and have this all go straight to Hell, but so far it hasn't. I really like this show so far.

Agreed. We are just beat over the head with it all over the place now and Picard was just so bad about it.
