Finally indeed..

E1 was a good Prime Directive episode. These types of stories have been used frequently throughout the history of Star Trek and most of them have been good.

One advantage Pike has is knowing that his fate is 10 years out means he can take chances that he would otherwise not take.

The Security Chiefs last name "Noonien Singh" is an obvious link the Khan...we'll see how that plays out.

So they send a parry to do first contact with a war like planet and send a crew of three. With none of the three being skilled in combat? They left the ship empty for any passing alien to just take?

Other than that. It was a very star trek plot. Seek to resolve conflict and expand the federation.

Sounds pretty Star Trek to me. Number One is trained in combat, not sure when they mentioned that her crew was untrained. Warp signature usually means that the planet is peaceful enough to focus on deep space travel instead of a planetwide war. In this case it was a planet entirely engulfed in war that stumbled over another planet's warp technology.

With that map of first contact progress, it looked like they had a huge number in process at that time, too many to assign to full battleships.

It's just one episode, but I was very happy with the crew, the casting, and how they're addressing Pike's impending doom. The audience knows that he's on borrowed time, now we don't have to sit through a series where the entire cast doesn't realize that they're sitting under the Sword of Damocles.

Beth Chapel being such an active (and proactive) character took me by surprise, but I liked the change.

I didn't know about the Lt. Kirk twist. That was well done. They suckered me in good.

Haven’t seen this show - but did they actually do this?
They showed the January 6th protesters, the anti-police riots, and "No Justice No Peace" protestors.

They referred to it as the 2nd Civil War, which was followed by the Eugenics War.

Do you remember Sam Kirk was briefly in TOS? Jim Kirk found his brother dead.

I wonder how that's going to play out.

Pike is just so damn likeable. He made Season 2 of Discovery somewhat watchable. I am glad they stuck with him. And it is like someone realized at CBS that audiences like watching sexy people on TV. Discovery went out of its way to cast ugly, fat freaks.

I loved the first episode.

As a contrast, watching the end of Picard season 2, is terrible. And I really wanted to like it.

Also, just posting this here because on PT they are trying to frame that WW3 flashback as political leaning, it certainly wasn't.

This is what I said in that thread:

quote:

This needs to be seen in context. They did say it led to WW3, but also called it "The Fight for Freedom" and "The Eugenics War" (COVID, Bill Gates anyone?) and framed it in that the people fighting for freedom were on the right side, but it ultimately led to WW3.

It was done well IMO, pointing out both sides as the cause. They used it as a moment to say "see, humanity sucked and killed each other over and over but we eventually figured it out" and lead to the next era of enlightenment, and Starfleet, etc.

I knew this entire thread would be people who just read headlines, etc. Because it was not some damning thing for either side. They used that day (rightfully so, tbh) as a day where the divide in humanity was the greatest
and everything stemmed from that moment.

Which, let's be honest, Jan 6th regardless of how you feel about it, was a major moment in US and human history.

When does season 3 of The Orville come out so I can watch some real trek?

The Eugenics War was Khan and his supermen vs the regular humans. It’s from the original series. It “happened” in the 1990’s. They’ve had to tweak that timeline.

I'm guessing they're using a sliding timeline, because originally the Eugenics War happened in the 1990s.

Of course Voyager took a dump on that before SNW or Picard did, so... eh.

Episode 2 is now up.

You won't be disappointed. Very good story. Some Uhura background and a good balance of story and special effects.

On the subject of special effects, we got to see the Enterprise Maneuver in a crisis in ways we haven't before but also plausible.

It's rare to see a new series launch so very well. Very old-school Star Trek.

Good to hear, I enjoyed episode 1. I've been an Anson Mount fan since Hell on Wheels.
