We all know why. It was the definition of a B movie

Reparations ... pat on the backs .... on an on.

Sinners is a descent film and somewhat unique (even if it is clear 90's B movie with some good filmmakers). It got swept up in tidal wave of good energy and reception ... If it would have garnered 10 or 12, there wouldn't be such a reaction. The most ever? That is a bit much for sure.

But as an actual member and voter, I can assure you there is no agenda to reward something because of some sort of allegiance to diversity. People and critics reacted to it and that shows in the voting. The nomination process requires voters to select 10 films, so of course a film that was talked about all year (premiered around Easter) would stay on their mind as a top ten option.

When the entire Academy votes (you only vote for your branch and best picture in the nomination process) .... Timothee wins, One Battle cleans up and all the technical awards go elsewhere --- the record will be a footnote.

The "dance scene" that everyone fricking RAVES about was one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. I hated that scene with a passion and everyone else absolutely goes gaga far it

You mean the musical history one right and not the Irish jig sung and danced by Paddy Mayne, right?

And I don't know if MBJ is "oscar worthy" b

That's by far the most legitimate nomination

Sinners was a good movie. But to give reference it wasn’t as good as Housemaid.

It’s basically just a race swapped remake of From DuskTil Dawn

middling movie made cringe by throwing in the obligatory KKK scene at the end which seemed oddly out of place for the rest of it but of course, white man bad and southern white man REAL REAL bad.

If From DuskTilDawn just had all blacks they would have gotten more nominations than Lord of the Rings.

one of my coworkers who is a black/white mix came back to work after seeing it and was crying saying how moving it was about how important black culture was and white people are bad.

2 criminal brothers (one a serious professional and the other, a violent loose cannon) go to a bar that gets attacked by vampires. One of the brothers gets bitten and turned, forcing the other brother to have to make the difficult decision whether or not to kill his brother while he and the rest of the survivors fight off the vampire hordes in an desperate attempt to survive until sunrise.

Which movie did I just describe?

I really liked it. 16 Oscars is over the top. But it definitely deserves to be recognized.

The Oscars are now a mark against a movie or an actor

This tells you the state of the business. Just not many movies made anymore and not as many original ones. It was entertaining but not oscar great.

It's OK but nowhere near 16 Oscars good or its hype, generally.
It was very good

But the spate of movies it is competing with, is why it got 16 noms

2025 was pretty shite for Hollywood

Probably worse than 2024, if you can believe that

I guess from a movie-making perspective it's an achievement to choreograph and get on film, but from an entertainment perspective? Ehh.

It's true. There is no history or precedent of audiences considering music and dancing in movies to be entertaining...
