Election is a perfect movie.

Sometimes I'm too lazy to read an old mega thread and prefer a new thread on a specific topic.

It's mostly just about common sense. The mods will anchor anything they really don't want bumped. The problems with bumping don't really apply to this board -- most of the backlash is against people on the various sports boards using bumping to troll. Not such an issue here despite the OP's complaints about this board's tone, which is a different issue.

To come back to the board's tone... I think there has to be some sort of common understanding about the rules of discourse.
To be accepted they have to be pretty consistent and fair. Some of what you immediately notice (in any conflict of opinions which escalates to harsh words or worse) is people are intrinsically wired to be more sensitive to their own values or perspectives being offended than they are to the values or perspectives of others being treated in similar fashion.
This is why one of the essential components of morality is a common sense of fair play and rules that you apply to yourself as equally as you apply to others - to improve the well being of everyone (even when it means you constrain your ability to express yourself in every way your emotions might tempt you to try). The hard part really is refusing to call the other person an a-hole when you loathe their opinion.
Some of the stuff you see mentioned this thread as identifications of problems really don't amount to much more than identification of things or people that annoy the poster in question.
Those aren't really actionable complaints. Why? Because when they don't include some sort of equally applicable standard of behavior that amounts to more than "stop saying or doing things I don't like" it obviously isn't really useful. The goal after all is to have a discussion forum that is useful for discussion. And that requires some forms of objective self restraint and common decency (that has respected boundaries).

quote:No. If you make a post to Another thread, you might not get many replies, if any. Starting a new thread often sparks several pages of discussion. I'm not sure why that is, but it's true and why people start independent threads.

If you don't like new threads, don't bump them, and bump the ones you like - unless there's nothing left to say in them, in which case they don't deserve to be on the front page.

I think its this more than anything, and for that, I must take some of the blame as one of the admins here. I've always believed in regulating conversation as little as possible and letting this place police itself. This has always been one of the most civil and collegial boards on the site. Even in disagreements, there's been a healthy respect for people's opinions.
And I think that's not true anymore. We are all just meaner to each other, less tolerant of opposing viewpoints, and most importantly, like Barton Fink WE. JUST. DON'T LISTEN.
It's not that there aren't good movies coming out. There's plenty of good movies coming out. The Oscar slate always gets derided, but there's a nice range of interesting films on it. We're in a golden age of horror movies. There's been some outstanding indies (mother!, Faces Places, Brawl in Cell Block 99). It's not just CGI fests, which I'd argue are better than they've ever been, as a group. And that doesn't get into TV.
Disagreement is cool, it's what makes discussion good. Being a jerk isn't. It is on each of us to raise the tenor of debate.
Be nicer.
I'm bumping this thread, Baloo, and I'm asking you to put your money where your mouth is. When did this become acceptable behavior on this site: LINK
Approving an entire poster dedicated solely to harassing me. When did these rules go out the window: LINK
quote:
2. DO NOT “flame the board.” “Flaming” is the deliberate act of creating a post in order to incite members of the board and invoke a negative response.
3. DO NOT expect any tolerance for statements, opinions, or views that are bigoted, racist, sexist, or hateful. Further, linking to sites that contain such content is prohibited.
4. DO NOT engage in personal attacks on other users. Healthy debate is expected and encouraged, but take the childish insults elsewhere. This is particularly true with regard to visitors from other schools. Moderators will be especially watchful for verbal abuse, ridicule, ad hominem attacks, and stalking.
This is ridiculous. This isn't Nam, there are rules. In addition, we let a poster like Wild Thang (who is in all likelihood behind that alter) go nuts and stalk and troll everyone, while at this time 12 out of 20 of his most recent posts are nothing but direct insults to other posters: LINK
You want to clean up this board, how about you start by banning those two. Put your money where your mouth is, because no poster should have to put up with this shite.

There’s a lot of trolling happening on this board which is killing legit discussion when earnest fans try to respond. Learn to recognize trolls and ignore them. If you want an example of what and who I’m referring to, start a blade runner 2049 thread (or check out any of the other ones in existence) and you will soon find out.

I've deleted the first account. As for Wild Thang, I looked at his history, and his most recent post here are all completely on topic. Of course, most his posts are on other boards, mainly the Poli Board, which is a complete cesspool that we should nuke from orbit. But I'm not going to step on the toes of that board and drive-by admin it.

I vote that we quarantine any poster who has more than 10% of their posts on the poli board so that they can only post on the poli board.

Even more effective, start a thread that has something positive to say about TLJ. You can't say anything negative or positive about movies that are consensus around here without kicking off an intense amount of whining. You want better discussion? Police that bullshite.
Posted on 2/14/18 at 5:53 pm to DisplacedBuckeye
I can't make the insecure man-babies clutching their Han Solo action figures like The Last Jedi. Particularly because the movie is honestly a direct attack on fan culture. That's what makes it so great. Just remember, every time they rush in to gang rush a positive thread on TLJ, it's actually the highest praise the film can receive.
But I'm not going to delete people's posts for their honest opinions. And I do not doubt they honestly hate it.

That wasn't a call to arms. I'm simply explaining to the previous poster why those threads become what they are. If I post something negative about Blade Runner or positive about TLJ, I'm met with stupidity. I'll not give serious discussion to those types of people. Ever.
If that's not welcome here, I'm fine with that, but it is what it is.
The admins do just fine here. PT? Well...
