Top Gun was maybe the ultimate 80's movie. Culture has changed a lot in the approx 4 decades, society, technology, American military policy (and history of engagements). Remember, the biggest thing since Vietnam that happened at this point was Grenada...
I think this was another reason for its success. The movie was not that far removed from the end of the Vietnam War. The few movies up to that point on the war showed the dark side of the war. Combine that with the bad taste of the war in most peoples mind since it was one of the first covered daily in the news and with soldiers returning home from a losing war. Top Gun came out and for the most part avoided the war. It also showed the US victorious in the end, albeit just shooting down a few Russian MiGs. But the point is the US was shown as a winner.

Did anyone else notice the mission is basically the same as the attack on the Death Star in Star Wars

Just saw it today. Question, why did Mav put on the whites, and what did he whisper to Penny?

Finally got to see the movie. Been overseas for the past few months and have been salivating about watching it. Did not disappoint in the slightest. The flight scenes blew the original out of the water and that’s saying something.
Hangman’s cockiness was a bit overdone IMO though. And the flying of the F-14 off of a cratered runway was a bit much too. But IDGAF because it was Top Gun and it was awesome.
Anyone think Miles Teller could carry a top gun franchise?

I think so.

Fricking awesome movie though and it didn’t even need to rely on the nostalgia. Saw it a week ago on July 4th though which was perfect. Nice to get a feel of American exceptionalism in the theaters for once. Haven’t seen that in a decade

Finally saw it today myself and it was badass. Yeah the plot and lines were corny and predictable but the last third of the movie was intense and the whole thing was a throwback to classic summer blockbusters we all grew up watching. Definitely lived up to the hype for me.

So in a lot of ways, Hangman more closely mirrored Maverick's role in the first film, not Ice.

Finally saw it last night, and though my expectations were super high after all the hype, I was not disappointed. The plot was clever and well-constructed, though a bit contrived at times. Miles Teller continues not to impress me, but he never ruins a movie, and he does look a bit like Anthony Edwards with the mustache. The member berries were pretty thick at first, but it eases into its own as the film moves into the second act.
The characters were good, but some could have used a bit more development, especially as the competition went on and pilots were eliminated. I just felt like I could have known a bit more about them. The girl and Bob team could have been a bigger dynamic. She was still done well, though. She made the cut and was instrumental in the mission without being an irritating Mary Sue who easily wins everything.
All in all, it was a great sequel with really good writing. I'm not interested in further sequels, though. Not everything has to be a franchise.

BUMP - Top Gun: Maverick is available for digital purchase today for $19.99.
Told my wife that tonight we'll watch the season finale of Only Murders in the Building and then it's Top Gun time. This will be my third watch and first out of the theater. It's been a really rough few days after losing our pet. This will be a nice distraction tonight.

I heard this morning that it is going to be released with additional never before seen footage. I wonder if that will be included in the digital download or if you have to wait for that "version"?
And OMITB is the finale tonight?? It just seems so short!

Help an idiot out, does it matter where you download it from as far as quality (whether its the platform itself or actual download)? Would the audio and video quality be the same no matter what platform you watch it on?

That's a good question. I rarely ever buy digital movies. The few I have are because it was either the same or close to the cost of renting it, usually right when it's first released. I used to buy off of VUDU but had some password issues. They offered tiers, something like Standard, HD and UltraHD. It was usually a dollar to go up the tiers.
The Amazon Prime app on my Playstation is a good one stop shop for a few services: Amazon Prime content, movie/TV rentals or purchases, and the Paramount+ content. I haven't noticed any tiers, although sometimes the 4K version are separate from non 4K but that seems less common now. Top Gun is $19.99 and will stream based on your internet connection. If you have a good connection you'll get the best picture. I've found most of the rentals are like that now.
I would love to hear someone else chime in. My impression is that you would have to be a pretty observant watcher to really notice quality differences between the top options across the streamers. But I could be wrong.
I have a nice 85 inch TV. I'm thinking the video quality based on watching trailers won't be much of a step down from the theater. It's smaller than a movie screen but I also sit much closer in my recliner. But the sound, and I have pretty good sound, will be something I just can't compete with. Also this is a rare time where I'll say seeing it with an audience was a plus. I would still recommend someone see it in a theater for the first time and that is not a comment I've made about any other movie in a LONG time.

I bought it on Apple TV tonight and the picture was fantastic. God I could rewatch that movie many times over.

Just finished it first run through. I was fully prepared to NOT like it but loved it! It wasn't perfect, pretty much the same formula as the first one and so very predictable but that didn't take away from the enjoyment. Every time it had a throwback moment to the first movie I though "oh hell, here we go with living too much on the original" but it never over did it. I thought the tie-ins to the first one were just enough without crossing the line.

Same
Any idea where/when/how to get the extra footage that is supposed to be included? I went back to the iTunes Store but couldn’t figure it out.

I'm not sure how to get to it if you're on your TV as I couldn't find the button, but when I was watching again on my phone this morning, there was an "Extras" button where the controls were. I clicked on it and it looks to be like the bonus features you'd see on a regular DVD release. Lots of behind the scenes stuff

Finally saw this and it was fantastic. Love the Star Wars Death Star setup and one of the pilots even says "Stay on Target".
