It's no small feat to say Maverick was a fantastic sequel that succeeds far more than anyone could ever have imagined.

Top Gun was maybe the ultimate 80's movie. Culture has changed a lot in the approx 4 decades, society, technology, American military policy (and history of engagements). Remember, the biggest thing since Vietnam that happened at this point was Grenada... we haven't even invaded Panama yet, let alone the Gulf Wars, Afganistan, involvement in the Balkans etc. So "military conflict" at this point might mean a couple jets putting radar lock on one from another country.

The fact that you can take Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, and successfully plot his storyline from the mid-80's, to today, with all that history overlaid, and keep it fairly believable at every turn, is huge. Yeah, you can say it's silly that he steals an F14 at the end and fights his way to freedom after being shot down, but they even were able to address why that plane isn't splashed on the way back to the carrier (Rooster's transponder).

You tell me they're trying to make this movie 5 years ago, and I'd say it would be absolute shite and straight to streaming services, if they even finish it. Instead, it's going to be the biggest movie of the year.

All of this.

Maverick were superior to their original movie.

Even though it relied on extremely contrived plot points? There is no way in hell the Navy runs that mission without at least a pair F-35c along to secure the skies. The "but they have GPS jammers" reasoning for a poorly-planned mission was laughable. Also, a bunch of kids born in the late 90s all knowing Great Balls of Fire verbatim was dumb.

It was a fun popcorn action flick, but the plot and dialogue were middling to bad.

You either "get it", or you don't.

Top Gun wasn't a Tom Clancy super-accurate story, either.

As for the bar scene with them singing Great Balls of Fire... that wasn't a well-known song in the 80's either. It's from the 50's. But Goose sung it in Top Gun, and it's a fun song (like an Elvis song), and his friends would get to know it and sing along because they were buddies.
And he did it with little Rooster sitting alongside him, so Rooster was carrying it over from that. And those that were his friends would also know it, same exact reason. And let's not forget, Rooster WAS selected because he was a top grad of the program, so he wasn't "just some shmuck" singing. Hangman and Coyote knew who he was.

Check your local theaters. It’s back in Imax up here in Indiana if you wanna catch it in a large format again.

I'd recommend seeing this one in the theater, my seat was shaking and the floor rumbled to the planes.

Good movie, maybe better than the first.

Talk to me dad vs talk to me Goose.

I mean, on top of all of that, it’s only one of the most famous rock and roll songs in music history. JLL was one of the pioneers of RnR, and that’s his most popular/famous song.

I’m sure most kids today know the most famous Beatles songs, and they were made in the 60s.

Not to mention that a song like GBoF would lend itself to be popular in a bar with a fricking piano in it.

What a ridiculous argument.

Well that’s just patently false it’s a rock n roll standard that was a hit in 1957. Top Gun was released in 1986 thats 29 years. People today know songs from the early 90s.

Did anyone else notice the mission is basically the same as the attack on the Death Star in Star Wars

Old school fan service to Star Wars OG and Iron Eagle.

Iron Eagle vibe for the runway escape.

Cheesy, but who doesn't like some top notch cheese on their pizza. Plus it showed Mav and Rooster finally talking.

I actually turned to my wife and said "use the force, Luke" when they were in their bombing run.

The movie was fun. My favorite scene was the opening 10 mins. The rocket jet flying around looked cool as hell. Some amazing looking shots.

We saw it the past Sunday in IMAX at the Palladium in High Point if anyone is looking around here.

You mean the F-5s from the original film weren't "Mig-28s"?

Still makes way more sense than:

1. Any MCU film since Infinity War

2. Any Star Wars product since Return of the Jedi (frankly, that one is sketchy, too)

3. Any Star Trek film since First Contact

4. Anything on the CW

5. I'm sure I'm missing a lot.

Great film. Last film I saw twice in the cinema was Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

(ETA: And the USAF would likely be responsible for clearing the airspace with F-22s. They ruled out using F-35s so the mission had to run with 18s. They had to have drama of being outgunned. If it was going to be, "We push this button and then that button, and the mission is over" we wouldn't have much of a movie.)

Hangman was by far my favorite character. Flying in like Han Solo at the end gave me a little tingle in my shorts

Yeah, was out of the country when this came out and came back too tired to see it the following Sunday, spaced JW coming out the next weekend to push it out of Superscreen/DLX at my local movie tavern….but it came back to that screen because it’s a moneymaker unlike Lightyear.., granted I had to see it at 10:45pm Saturday night but was totally worth it. What a fun movie experience.

This thread should be 4 pages shorter if DS didn’t feel the need to reply and disagree with everyone and keep reinforcing his take which didn’t need reinforcing. Go be happy somewhere else dude

Agreed, although the USAF was not brought in on this one, thus Raptors were a no go.
F-35c's against a Gen 5 like the Su-57 is also quite the mismatch of sorts, and not in NavAirs favor. The movie clearly made point that the birds used in the mission (Super Hornets) would very likely not return, be it by S-300's or the enemy Gen 5's.

Saw it in IMAX.

Really liked it.

The sex scene was hilariously watching two aging movie stars look at each other like they really didn’t want to shoot that scene.

Maverick’s quest for excellence is the soul of this movie.
Hangman and Rooster were great.
Cyclone was a good antagonist.
