Neeson absolutely could pull this off.. and Seth McFarlane has worked with him before, in a very similar deadpan way (in Ted he has a great scene about buying Trix, even though they are 'only for children').
So the director knows he can do it... but from the trailer it looks like someone insisted on inserting some typical slapstick humor, which probably won't land

One of the best stories I've heard about Nielson was that during the making of Airplane! the crew thought he had no sense of humor because he was the only actor who never laughed at the jokes.
He does, he just maintained the deadpan delivery the entire time. Man is a legend.

Just like that skit its going to all come down to the writing. Which for comedy in Hollywood right now…I’m not hopeful.

There are better dead pan actors out there. I get the feeling Neeson’s cop character in the Lego movie is what got him this part but that character isn’t Frank at all.

I have been hoping he would make a straight comedy since that scene. That scene is brilliant.
