EXCLUSIVE: Even as he continues his festival run with his adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ Queer, Luca Guadagnino looks to have his sights set on another high-profile adaptation. Sources tell Deadline that he is in final negotiations for a new interpretation of the book American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis for Lionsgate. Scott Z. Burns will pen the adaptation. The Lionsgate film will be produced by Frenesy Films, and executive produced by Sam Pressman, the son of Edward R. Pressman, producer of 2002 original movie, through his company Pressman Film.
The novel by Ellis was a groundbreaking and controversial work when it was published in 1991, not only for its iconic Manhattan investment banker turned serial killer but also for its incredible attention to detail for the world it was entering, as well as the graphic violence its main character delivered, leading to it being censored in several countries.
While the first film starring Christian Bale and directed by Mary Harron has gained a following over the years, sources say that rather than a remake, Guadagnino’s film will be a new adaptation of Ellis’ novel. The property is something the studio has been trying to crack for some time, and following recent meetings with Guadagnino execs felt he was the perfect choice to bring a fresh take.

Once again, please remake solid source material that was poorly adapted into a movie rather than solid source material that was brilliantly adapted into a movie. I can't imagine the remake being as good as the Bale version. He was perfect in that role.

New interpretation... In other words, yet another reboot with a female in the lead.

spoiler alert: its gonna be super gay

I’ll never forget going into American Psycho blind on TV one night a couple of years after it came out and wondering wtf I just watched.
Is there really a reason to remake it? I don’t see any way it can improve on the original.

It will be worse in every possible way than the original film, so why bother?

Why?
The Bale version is about as decent an adaptation as you are going to get.
That book is written in such an unusual fashion, such as whole chapters extolling the virtues of a specific artist and album, that it isn’t easily adaptable. Any future adaptation is going to be compared to the Bale version as a result.

That would be a new adaptation of Ellis’ Less Than Zero, where main viewpoint character Clay was either bi or heavily closeted gay.

Yeah there’s chapters upon chapters of run on sentences that add up to nothing more than the thoughts of a deranged mind. The movie walked a fine line with including that stuff just enough without dragging down the pacing of the movie.

I read the book decades ago and from what I remember, it was basically a satirical mockery of 80s pop culture.
I'm not sure how you reimagine it without destroying the source material.

100%. Luca G loves him some gaybois. I’ll watch though because he makes good movies, and because Aggy.
But yeah, nobody is asking for this “new interpretation.”

Well it’s a “new interpretation” so yeah it’s going to suck.

Could that be as bad as the sequel with a female lead?

Not sure how anyone thinks they can take that book and make anything that compares to the film we already have.

Yeah whenever anyone says the book is always better than the movie, the first two counter examples I’ll always bring up are this and Forrest Gump.
If Luca G wants to tackle a Bret Easton Ellis novel, he can try to do a non-after school special version of Less Than Zero. Or he can try something that hasn’t been done. A lot of Easton Ellis is full of annoying affectations, so it can be condensed pretty easily.
But this was a great adaptation and trying to replicate the Bale performance is like trying to coach Bama after Saban.

I really want an accurate version of Less Than Zero.
Doesn’t necessarily need to be an 80s period piece but the whole “rich LA kids chasing the latest high / taboo thrill” thing still resonated when I read the book the first time a good 20 years after it was released.
