The prophecy is about the return of the Long Night...

Well it was good move that they ended it before it could really get started. Based on all the bitching by the folks that could't see shite on their shitty TVs, more episodes like that would have nuked the whole show.

Why did the Lord of Light bring Jon back?”

Assuming Jon was in fact distracting the wight Dragon for Arya to kill the NK, I would say mission accomplished

Prophecies matter in this show only when the writers want them to.

"The dragon has three heads."

Obviously, the first two heads of the Dragon are Jon and Dany. Arya is not blood of the dragon, nor is she a dragon rider. Arya is No One.

Here is what Rhaegar said in the House of the Undying:

quote:

"He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire.". He appears to look at Dany then, as if seeing her, and then he adds that "There must be one more," and "The dragon has three heads.".

Based on the show, the Night King is the Third Head of the Dragon. As the dragon rider on an Ice Dragon, fighting Fire Dragons, that's the only option. Nothing about the prophesy states that the Third Head will kill the Night King.

In the book...still up for debate. Maybe the Great Other, maybe Aegon Blackfyre.

Rhaegar says the dragon has three heads.

Not the dragon has three riders.

Three dragon riders make for better candidates for three dragon heads.

Arya killed the Night King; nothing about that fact suggests that she is one of three Heads of the Dragon.

Maybe Jon’s 2nd Head was the 3rd head

Arya is Azhor Azhai
Jon/Dany can't be The Prince that was Promised.
Honest question, has the TV show ever discussed or mentioned Azhor Azhai/The Prince that was Promised?

It’s why I wonder they even bothered keeping Melisandre around for so long if the prophecy was bunk, and I’m afraid the answer to that question is that they went for shock factor more than great storytelling

Yes, it's Jon. He is Ice and Fire; Stark and Targaryen.

It's comical.

Kinvara was just in season 6 hitting us with this line.

quote:

"Daenerys Stormborn is the one who was promised. From the fire she was reborn to remake the world ... Daenerys has been sent to lead the people against the darkness in this war and in the great war still to come"

Then Mel in season 7 straight called Jon the prince as well.

Then another line from season 7

quote:

“The Long Night is coming. Only the prince who was promised can bring the dawn,” Melisandre told Daenerys, who replied, “I’m afraid I’m not a prince.”

“Your grace, forgive me, but your translation is not quite accurate,” Missandei said. “That noun has no gender in high Valyrian, so the proper translation for that prophecy would be “the prince or princess who was promised will bring the dawn.
