Let's talk about Prophecy ** Game of Thrones Spoilers**

There's been several comments on this board that Arya killing the Night King means:
The Dagger is Lightbringer
Arya is Azhor Azhai
Jon/Dany can't be The Prince that was Promised.
etc.
The prophecy in question is:
Azhor Azhai/The Prince that was Promised - (This could be one prophecy or two. It's unclear. Personally I think Azhor Azhai is the original and The Prince that was Promised is the reincarnation )
Now, if you stick to the "wake dragons out of stone" part this is obviously Daenerys. No one else has done anything like this.
If you acknowledge that she only birthed her dragons by taking them in to Drogo's funeral pyre, then the dragons are Lightbringer.
Now the other prophecy that's very popular is -
I would argue that the three heads of the dragon are Daenerys, Jon, and Arya.
If you watch the episode again, Daenerys uses Drogon, to clear a path for Jon to get to Bran.
When Jon gets stuck by the wight dragon at the entrance to the Godswood, he stands up and screams in the face of the dragon but it's not one continuous scream of frustration like it might appear. He keeps the dragon focused on him and screams "Gooooooo! Go! Go!" - (He does. Watch it again)
The next shot is the wind blowing the white walker's hair as someone runs by.
I think one "head of the dragon" allowed Jon to get past the wights, another "head of the dragon" allowed Arya to get past the wight dragon, and the final "head of the dragon" killed the Night King.
These three also balance the three heads of the dragon as a song of ice and fire. You've got 1 Targaryen (fire), 1 Stark (Ice), and 1 that's both - Jon.
This episode fulfilled prophecy as well as any episode before has.
Bring me your downvotes.

quote:
"There will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world. In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and the darkness shall flee before him."
quote:
"According to prophecy, our champion will be reborn to wake dragons from stone and reforge the great sword Lightbringer that defeated the darkness those thousands of years ago. If the old tales are true, a terrible weapon forged with a loving wife's heart. Part of me thinks man was well rid of it, but great power requires great sacrifice. That much at least the Lord of Light is clear on." ?Thoros of My
quote:
Melisandre states "When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone.

The problem with all the "the prophecy is over now" people is that they are taking it literal
when in the history of prophecies have they ever been meant to take literally
when in the history of prophecies have they ever been meant to take literally

We decided 3 years ago.... just didn’t feel right to be Jon.

Book prophesies mean absolute shite to the show. And show prophesies are mostly shite to the show.

And if George makes the same decision?

Well if so it sounds like D&D finished his book for him.

Then either D&D got really lucky or George is as lazy as he's always been and simply used their ending.

In show parlance, the folks that lived in the time of Azhor Azhai probably thought it was over too.

The one question I am left with is
“Why did the Lord of Light bring Jon back?”
Beric served his purpose and died.
Will Jon die once his purpose is revealed?

If George ever finishes the books, I have to think it will be starkly different then the outcome of the show. It may even be part of the reason the next book hasn’t come out yet. People would likely not be pleased if book 6 comes out and Jon doesn’t get revived, or something like that.
I just can’t see Martin making these same choices, nor could I see him releasing a book whose ending is already known

He gathered the army that allowed the circumstances that lead to the Night King's death to take place. That by itself would be enough, but he may still go on to rule the 7 kingdoms as well.

No need to address that. We are subverting expectations here.

Of course not. The show started deviating from the books in season 1.
Posted on 5/1/19 at 1:22 pm to Green Chili Tiger
True, but once the show passed the books it seemed like the direction moved much further away from Martin’s style
ETA what deaths have shocked anyone since Jon’s?

Maester Marwyn's take on prophecy was the best one. Well, ok he was quoting Gorghan or Old Ghis, but this is what he told Sam and some others at the Citadel:
quote:
Gorghan of Old Ghis once wrote that a prophecy is like a treacherous woman. She takes your member in her mouth, and you moan with the pleasure of it and think, how sweet, how fine, how good this is... and then her teeth snap shut and your moans turn to screams. That is the nature of prophecy, said Gorghan. Prophecy will bite your prick off every time

quote:The prophecy is about the return of the Long Night... just like it's about the return of Azor Ahai to stop it.
Wasn't the Long Night a historical tale, not a prophecy?
