Mangold is a good filmmaker, so I'm hoping he can breathe some life into Star Wars.

quote:

As James Mangold makes his mark on a galaxy far, far away with his upcoming Star Wars installment, he’s emphasizing the “long time ago” part of the setting.

The 2x Oscar nominee, who is set to co-write and direct Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi, recently teased that his prequel will aim to “find a way on the page to say something original” about the origin of The Force without relying too much on the franchise’s established lore.

“To me, the really important aspects are the freedom to make something new. [Screenwriter Beau Willimon] and I, in relation to Star Wars, have been working on a script, and we’ll see what happens,” he told MovieWeb.

“The Star Wars movie would be taking place 25,000 years before any known Star Wars movies take place,” added Mangold. “It’s an area and a playground that I’ve always [wanted to explore] and that I was inspired by as a teenager. I’m not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it’s almost immovable, and you can’t please anybody.”

I will never understand people doing this, and that includes George Lucas

As long as he's talking about ignoring Disney Star Wars lore, I'm good with it.

If you don’t want to use Star Wars lore, then just make a different space opera. Why even tie it in with Star Wars?

ETA: Also, I like Mangold, but if his history with Lucas films is any indication, I’d rather him not make a Star Wars movie

Doesn’t Want To Be “Handcuffed” To ‘Star Wars’ Lore

I've thought about writing a Star Wars script but I've been concerned about being handcuffed to the lore, too. I really want to bring a fresh take to the series, and slavish devotion to the established rules of the setting just get in the way and cramp my artistic vision. See, the question I have been asking myself is, "Why do all Star Wars stories have to be set in space?" There's really no good answer, so I've decided to set my script in eighteenth-century France right at the eve of the French Revolution. The heroine will be a poor orphaned girl who doesn't know who her parents are, but through the power of the Force (which in my script is really nothing more than a true belief in the power and moral rectitude of the lower class) and the beauty of her own femininity (by which I mean masculinity in a female body, of course) she will learn that her father is actually Jean-Paul Marat, and together they will overthrow the evil Emperor - I mean, King - Louis XVI. Then peace and happiness will reign throughout the land and nothing will ever go wrong ever again. I'm going to call it Star Wars: Genevieve's Revenge.

i think you guys may be taking the Lore part out of context - I read it to be that he doesnt want to be handcuffed by what is there now - meaning having to develop a script including everything - instead building somethign that ties in, but not in a "skywalker" lineage type deal - at least I hope I am right

Just do what Zack Snyder did. Make your own Star Wars movies without saying Force, Empire, Rebellion, or midi-chlorian.

That is what I got from it, he likes that the movie is set 25000 years before anything else because there is no lore from that long ago that he has to be worried about telling his story around.

Except that he is likely to make a movie that none of the original can ti to in anyway because they don't fit his lore.

Not saying that is good or bad, but Star Wars fans gonna Star Wars fan.

As long as he realizes Star Wars fans aren’t interested in knowing the kinks and weird sexual fetishes of the characters, nor do we want another Mary Sue girl-boss story.
