Is there anyone here that doesn't think Mad Men was one of the best shows ever?

I knew it was highly regarded, but I refrained from reading any past threads until I finished the series.

It had it's moments for me, but I found myself not caring about any of the characters. They're a bunch of workaholic, alcoholic, homewreckers, but unlike say The Sopranos, who were also garbage people (albeit a bigger, stinkier pile of garbage), I did not find the characters interesting enough, or the lifestyle exotic enough to care whether or not they got their comeuppance.

Plus, the effort to make Pete and Peggy out to be objects of lust made me irrationally annoyed.

It’s not, but it’s an enjoyable experience

It's good...but as I was about to start season 4 (maybe 5), I realized that I just didn't care about any of the characters or what was happening to them. DNF.

Put me in the didn't finish crowd. Not sure but I think I made it through season 4

I’ve tried to watch it twice and quit both times for the above reasons.

There are plenty of shows about terrible people that have some redeeming qualities. I just couldn’t get there with Mad Men.

One of the best ever? Depends on how wide that net is to you. It was very good but probably went a season or 2 too long.

I used those words because they were often expressed in old threads.

Didn’t finish. It was fine for the seasons I watched it. But it became a slog.

I hated the actor who played Pete. It was way over the top. Tried to play it off as "That's how they were in that time period" but no one acts like that ever. He was a clown.

I thought it was great. Whether it is one of the best ever depends on how long the list is. Top ten? No. Top twenty-five? Maybe. The cast, writing, and reproducing the 60's was great.

I also started it and didn't finish it. I love anything set in that time period so it should've been a GOAT but even with someone like Jon Hamm, I didn't feel like anybody in that show had any charisma or anything to actually get hooked on. It looked cool but I was bored as hell

I'll give you that. The wardrobe, styling, and set design was top notch. My girl is the reason I finally watched it. She's an interior designer who loves mid century modern, so I see why she loved the show.

ETA: When I told her the actor who plays "Sal" owns a home decor boutique on Magazine St. in NOLA, she lit up.

It's one of my Top 5 shows. But I love period piece productions and just enjoyed it's progression.

I am genuinely curious though as it broadcasted right before binging shows online got really big if that could be a factor for some folks. I don't think I could've watched it back to back to back but need to sit with the episodes sometimes after the fact.

If you went that far it's worth it for the ending of the last episode. However, if you weren't around in the 70's/80's you might not get it...(the last scene, I mean).

Top 5 for me too, and I do watch it 2-3 episodes at a time.

I think it's just an elite period piece.

I could never finish it. Felt like it had it's popularity more on how well it nailed the time period over how good the actual story/writing was.

I agree. Mad Men is about as real as it gets in portraying that time period that I grew up in.
Excluding mini-series, there aren't many shows I would rate above it.

That's a really bad take. Pete Campbell was a great character. Yes he was a cad, chauvinist and obnoxious. However, he had a great arc over the course of a series. Pete ended up getting out of Manhattan and being happy when at the first of the show he was old Manhattan and couldn't even drive a car.
