Gen X here, but I think it's a fun movie.

Millennial is more the time period, late 90s/early 00s

The post-Scream revival that was largely meh to me.

Final Destination series
I Know What You Did Last Summer series
Scream 2-4
Jeepers Creepers
Urban Legend
Disturbing Behavior
The Faculty

I guess I could include "MTV" in the name of the style.

It was like a stylized version of 80s teen slashers without real scares, so it was very safe and easily digestible.

There's a reason the next big mainstream style was the other end of the spectrum (gore porn).

I know it has a cult following, but I just don't get it.

It can't really be a large following. It's pretty universally looked upon as having two distinct halves (though the early part isn't quite half of the movie). But the first portion of it is legit good, if not great. And the rest of the movie is laughably terrible.

But the setup was really, really good.

It's actually worse.

The victim was a 12 year old that he forced to blow him and the victim says the abuse started even earlier.

quote:

In 1988, Salva was convicted of sexual misconduct with one of Clownhouse's underage stars, who was 12 years old at the time, and videotaping one of the encounters in which he forced the victim to perform oral sex on him. Commercial videotapes and magazines containing child pornography were also found in his home. Salva pleaded guilty to lewd and lascivious conduct, oral sex with a person under fourteen, and procuring a child for pornography. He was sentenced to three years in state prison, of which he served 15 months. He completed his parole in 1992.

quote:

His victim, Nathan Forrest Winters, later released a documentary detailing the sexual abuse by Salva, which began when Winters was 7 years old following a year of grooming.

He also seems to have little remorse.

quote:

Salva said, "This has followed me around ever since it happened, but once people meet me the phantoms go away and they realize I made a stupid mistake, years ago. ... My past is going to follow me around for as long as people want to talk about it.

Powder was a f'n Disney film for god's sake.

WTF is wrong with our civilization that this guy is wealthy and war vets live under the bridge.

It's not a good movie. I enjoy it because of nostalgia but if I saw it for the first time now, I would probably dismiss it. There is a whole genre of horror movies from the late 90s to early 2000s that seem made for people that don't like horror movies. They are fun but pretty low brow and not very scary.

just wait until you watch Jeepers Creepers 2 when all the scenes are on a school bus.

just makes you think what those movies could have been if someone like Spielberg did it.

it doesnt require big sets, just imagination, timing, and decent monster guy makeup

Geez, I bet you never even found porn in a wooded area near your house while growing up too. I'm sorry for your deficient upbringing. Get some better horror movie recs and correct this moving forward. Here's one....The Howling(1981). Good luck.

Also noticed this from his Wiki:
quote:

Salva's family disowned him at 18 when he came out as gay to his mother and stepfather.[2] Salva was a child-care worker at some point before becoming a filmmaker.[1]

I sure hope he didn't have unfettered access to children during that time.

This plus how can any self-respecting actor work for someone like this? If I found out my boss was a pathetic pedo, I am gone.

The 1st half of the movie was an extremely well done horror movie. Once the creature is revealed though it ventures way more into silly territory. Overall its not bad but the shift in tone is pretty jarring and i can see how that might turn people off.
